Daredevil And Elektra Team-Up In Marvel Comics Relaunch

Marvel Comics is relaunching Daredevil again following the “Devil’s Reign” story arc with a new creative team. Matt Murdock is now working with on-again-off-again girlfriend Elektra Natchios to keep the New York section of Hell’s Kitchen safe from The Hand, now led by the Punisher.
“Writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Marco Checchetto’s Eisner-nominated work on DAREDEVIL is reborn in a brand-new run kicking off on July 13,” Marvel said on their website. “Taking place in the aftermath of DEVIL’S REIGN, DAREDEVIL #1 will spotlight both Matt Murdock and Elektra Natchios and their vastly different journeys as Daredevil. Their ambitions and bold choices as heroes will transform Hell’s Kitchen and have a major impact on the Marvel Universe at large.”
“Right now, fans can get a peek at some of what they’ll be up against in new promotional artwork by Paulo Siqueira.” they added. “The joint pieces tease both Daredevil’s biggest challenges for the next year, including confrontations with the Avengers and the Punisher-led Hand, as well as further exploration of Luke Cage’s new role as mayor of New York City. In addition, DAREDEVIL #1 will come out the gate with a shocking reveal that ties back to Zdarsky’s earliest stories on the title and brings thrilling new insights to key moments in Daredevil history.”
Marvel also released the first look at the cover of the new series:


This is not the first time Marvel Comics has rebooted Daredevil. This will be the seventh relaunch and the eighth if you include the Ultimate Universe which saw Matt Murdock get killed in a flood caused by Magneto.
“Siqueira’s promotional artwork will also be featured as variant covers for DAREDEVIL #3 and DAREDEVIL #4. Check them out now and witness Zdarsky and Checchetto’s transformative take on DAREDEVIL when DAREDEVIL #1 hits stands this June 13,” Marvel Comics said.
The series will be available at the local comic book shops and for digital download.

Marvel Announces New Comic Book Releases For June

Marvel Comics is bringing readers some new content for the month of June. Thor, Spider-Man, Daredevil, Phoenix, and several other heavy hitters will be featured in the announced titles. It will not just be the Marvel Multiverse at the forefront, but also Star Wars, Alien, and Dracula will also be getting some new releases.
They also announced the first issue of the gaming crossover ‘Fortnight X Marvel: Zero War,’ a five-part miniseries for comic book and gaming fans from Christos Gage, Donald Mustard, and Sergio Davila.
“Be there for the beginning of this five-part crossover event with enormous ramifications for both universes when FORTNITE X MARVEL: ZERO WAR #1 goes on sale,” they said on their website. “…and don’t miss the redeemable code to unlock a bonus digital cosmetic in Fortnite that comes with each first print issue!”

Shout! Factory Nabs Florian Sigl’s ‘The Magic Flute’ North American Distribution Rights

Shout Factory picked up the distribution rights to the recent adaption of the fantasy story ‘The Magic Flute’ for a North American theatrical and home video release. This version is the latest in several adaptations of the opera by classic composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
“Shout! Studios, the multi-platform entertainment distribution and production arm of Shout! Factory, has acquired North American rights to THE MAGIC FLUTE from Flute Film,” they said on their website. “Shout! Studios has secured exclusive distribution rights in North America to THE MAGIC FLUTE, including theatrical and home entertainment rights (digital, video-on-demand, broadcast, and packaged media) for cross-platform releases. Shout plans a strategic launch of this movie across all platforms, beginning with a theatrical launch.”
Executive Producer Roland Emmerich expressed his enthusiasm for the deal, saying in a statement, “Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s masterpiece The Magic Flute has always been my favorite opera ever since I experienced this magical story as a young adult. I was immediately drawn to the concept of cinematically reimagining this story when the filmmaking team approached me with their idea, which I was thrilled to champion. The entire team brought their fantastic vision to the screen in an exciting and innovative way. I look forward to Shout! Studios bringing this epic journey to audiences to once again be enchanted by the universally acclaimed and world-famous music.”

The film is directed by Florian Sigl and produced by Flute Film. It stars an ensemble cast including Jack Wolfe (Shadow and Bone, The Witcher), Oscar®-winner F. Murray Abraham (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Amadeus), Iwan Rheon (Game of Thrones, Barbarians), Stéfi Celma (Call My Agent, Lost Bullet), Asha Banks (Royal Shakespeare Company), Stefan Konarske (Das Boot, Valerian), Niamh McCormack (The Witcher, Who We Love), Amir Wilson (The Secret Garden, The Letter for the King), and Tedros Teclebrhan (System Crasher, Bad Banks). International and renowned opera stars, such as French soprano Sabine Devieilhe (Opéra National de Paris), Mexican-French tenor Rolando Villazón, and U.S. bass Morris Robinson (Metropolitan Opera, New York).
As of the writing of this article, no official release date has been revealed. The movie had its debut at the Cannes Film Festival.

SPY × FAMILY Manga Earns A Spot On The NYT Bestseller List

Jump Comics’ espionage comedy ‘Spy X Family’ manga has been making waves. Created by Tatsuya Endo, the series has been serialized into a webcomic and was later published in English by Viz Media. The manga has become a hit with fans and critics, with it soon making its way onto the New York Times’ bestseller list.
Anime News Network reports that Volume One was number four on the June Graphic Books and Manga bestseller list. It was also featured on May’s list featuring the seventh and first volumes of SPY×FAMILY ranked at number five and number seven, respectively.


That is not the only bit of good news that the publishers and fans of ‘Spy X Family’ got. It has also been reported that the manga nabbed five of the top 20 spots on the NPD BookScan’s Top 20 adult graphic novels list for May. Various entries nabbed spots one, four, five, and thirteen. All but Yen Press’ Chugong and DUBU’s South Korean webcomic ‘Solo Leveling’ were manga.
The ‘Spy X Family’ Wiki describes the synopsis as follows,
“‘Twilight’ is assigned possibly his hardest mission yet, Operation Strix. As part of this mission he needs to marry and have a child in order to get close to his target Donovan Desmond. He ends up adopting Anya, a telepath, and marrying Yor, an assassin, however, all of them are hiding their identities from one another.
To complete his mission, Twilight needs to get Anya enrolled in the prestigious Eden Academy so that she can get close to his target’s son, Damian Desmond. To do that, Anya will need to become an Imperial Scholar by earning 8 Stella Stars, but the real challenge for “Twilight” though is making sure she doesn’t get 8 Tonitrus Bolts and get expelled!”
The manga series has been adapted into an anime from the Japanese animation companies CloverWorks and Wit Studios. The English dub is available on the Crunchyroll streaming service.

‘Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko’ Is Coming To Home Video In America

GKids and Shout! Factory are bringing the 2021 anime comedy film ‘Gyokou no Nikuko-chan,’ known in other markets as ‘Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko’ to a home video release in North America. This will include a digital release along with DVD and Blu-ray copies that will feature bonus features.
“The charming anime film Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko will be released in a Blu-Ray™ + DVD combo, as well for digital download on all major platforms, from GKIDS, with distribution from Shout! Factory on July 19, 2022,” GKids said on their website. “Planned and produced by the beloved Japanese actor and comedian Sanma Akashiya, Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko was based on the novel of the same name by Kanako Nishi. From acclaimed director Ayumu Watanabe (Children of the Sea) and STUDIO4°C (MFKZ, Mind Game) comes a heartwarming and moving comedy-drama with touches of magical realism. Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko is about an unconventional family and the bonds that they share in their sleepy seaside town.”
The DVD and Blu-ray releases will include a “making of” documentary that will give insight into the filmmaking of the movie and offer some insight into the animation. Following its release in Japan, the film acquired the Jury Special Mention in Axis: The Satoshi Kon Award for Excellence in Animation at the Fantasia International Film Festival.

As D-Rezzed previously reported, the movie is based on the novel ‘Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko’ by novelist Kanako Nishi.

Netflix’s One Piece Reveals Behind the Scenes Sneak Peek and 6 New Cast Members

Netflix Geeked Week 2022 began today at 12pm EST, highlighting shows and features coming out for the rest of the year. Today, they shared behind the scenes sneak peek at the art concepts and sets for the live action One Piece, including a few of the many of the pirate ships coming to life. As well as announcing 6 new cast members.

Filming began earlier this year with the director of the first two episodes announcing filming has been completed for the first two episodes on May 8th. Next step is to edit the cuts. Filming location is in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa.

Filming is expected to last for about 30 weeks for the entire first season series, which leads up to the end of August or beginning of September. As of today, it will be Week 19 of filming. McKinley, the actor playing Arlong, posted a photo of his Arlong chair on May 30th, indicating filming was about to begin for his part of the series.

Even though IMDB says it is premiering on June 22, 2022, there has been no confirmed premiere date, but it is not likely to premiere until near the end of the year, or beginning of next year.

First Look At Netflix & Tim Burton’s ‘Wednesday’

Our first look at Tim Burton’s Wednesday series for Netflix is here. Of course, it’s a teaser, but we do get a glimpse at the direction Burton is going with, and fans of the 1990s Barry Sonnenfeld films may like the look.
The teaser is just that. We get to see Scream‘s Jenna Ortega as the child of Morticia and Gomez Addams. Along with her is Thing, who is now a stitched together sentient hand.

Ortega’s Wednesday Addams isn’t as pale as I would have expected. However, considering most depictions of the character show her as ghostly white, it makes me wonder what other aesthetical changes are being made for one reason or another.
Christina Ricci is returning to the Addams Family franchise, but the word is she won’t be playing Morticia. Shame, considering Ricci could pull it off. So instead, the role of the Addams matron went to Catherine Zeta-Jones (shoulders back! Shoulders back!).
In a bit of spot-on casting, Gomez will be played by Luis Guzmán (Hightown). Guzmán has that Addams look about him, especially compared to the original comic version. By contrast, Isaac Ordonez is an odd pick for Pugsley because he’s still a pretty young actor, and his only other credit is as double in 2018’s A Wrinkle in Time.

From the imagination of Tim Burton comes ‘Wednesday’ — a twisted new series coming soon to Netflix. ‘Wednesday’ — starring Jenna Ortega in the title role, alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzman, Gwendoline Christie, Christina Ricci and more — is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy. Snap snap.

The series is not a continuation of the films from the ’90s, but it sounds like it has more in common with Scooby-Doo than the Addams franchise. Depending on your outlook on Burton’s works as of late, this could either be a boon for the creepy, kooky family or a bust.

Discotek Media To Release ‘Cyber City Oedo 808’ On Blu-Ray

‘Cyber City Oedo 808’ is a 1990-1991 three-part OVA anime cyberpunk series from the Japanese animation studio Madhouse. The show was created by Jûzô Mutsuki and directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri. Discotek Media announced that they had acquired the rights to release the series on blu-ray.
The home video release includes all three episodes digitally remastered and features both the original Japanese audio and the English dub versions. It is currently available for pre-order on Right Stuf Anime.

Wikipedia describes the synopsis as follows,
“To combat computerised crime more effectively, the Cyber Police unit of the future Japanese city of Oedo has restarted the feudal practice of hōmen (放免), employing hardened criminals with a history of hi-tech offences and other crimes such as murder as officers themselves.
Three such criminals are Sengoku, Gogul, and Benten, who are serving their 300-or-more year sentences in an orbital penitentiary. For duty served, each criminal will receive a reduction in their prison time. Desperate to get away from the boredom and monotony of jail life, they half-heartedly agree to the deal. They answer to police chief Hasegawa, who keeps them in check thanks to an explosive collar that each criminal wears around his neck. Hasegawa can blow this collar remotely and it will also explode if they fail to complete their missions within an allocated time period. Each one is also armed with a jitte (the traditional weapon and symbol of authority of the ancient Edo Police), although they also have access to more powerful weaponry.
Although there are no specifics to what kind of society the series is based in, it is presented as very high-tech but with a rather dystopian feel. In the first episode for example, a man under pressure confesses to a murder (which he did commit) and which is responsible for the present crisis. This is enough for Hasegawa to order Sengoku to kill the man there and then without so much as a trial. When Sengoku fails to do so his sentence is increased.”
U.S. Manga Corp previously had the North American rights to release ‘Cyber City Oedo 808’ before allowing to the license to expire.

Erin Young’s Crime Thriller ‘The Fields’ Is Heading To TV

Novelist Erin Young’s 2022 crime thriller debut ‘The Fields’ is getting a television adaption. Made Up Stories, Jennifer Todd Pictures, and Endeavor Content are handling the production with Kate Brooke serving as the writer and showrunner. Young will be an executive producer with Brooke and Todd.
“From the moment we read The Fields, we were hooked,” Papandrea and Todd told Deadline. “Erin has the incredible ability to weave ripped-from-the-headlines themes like Big Agriculture and political corruption with a heart-pounding, unpredictable murder mystery – and all without sacrificing an exceptionally grounded world. That is precisely why we were all thrilled when Kate Brooke, who masterfully crafts rich characters we want to root for, signed on to adapt. We could not be more excited to be working with this powerhouse team in bringing Erin’s chilling book to screen.”
