‘American Psycho’ TV Remake Is In The Works

The 2000 slasher film ‘American Psycho’ starring Christian Bale as serial killer Patrick Bateman has become a cult classic over time with several scenes becoming internet memes.
Directed by Mary Harron, it follows Bateman as he murders co-workers and bystanders as he dodges a nosy police detective played by Willem Dafoe. Its popularity saw a much-maligned sequel released in 2002. Now a Lionsgate Studio exec has confirmed that a TV remake of the black comedy horror is ‘in development.
Speaking to Deadline, “We’ve just wrapped up ‘Dear White People’ which was a really good experience, ‘Blindspotting’ is coming up, ‘American Psycho’ is in development.”
Little is known about the project, as no casting or release date has been announced as of the writing of this piece.
The 2000 film was based on the novel ‘American Psycho’ by writer Bret Easton Ellis. It follows Patrick Bateman, a New York investment banker who is secretly a serial killer. Things start to unravel when he murders his colleague, played by Jared Leto in the movie.
“[Bateman] was crazy the same way [I was],” Ellis said in an interview. “He did not come out of me sitting down and wanting to write a grand sweeping indictment of yuppie culture. It initiated because of my own isolation and alienation at a point in my life. I was living like Patrick Bateman. I was slipping into a consumerist kind of void that was supposed to give me confidence and make me feel good about myself but just made me feel worse and worse and worse about myself. That is where the tension of American Psycho came from. It wasn’t that I was going to make up this serial killer on Wall Street. High concept. Fantastic. It came from a much more personal place, and that’s something that I’ve only been admitting in the last year or so. I was so on the defensive because of the reaction to that book that I wasn’t able to talk about it on that level.”
When the 2002 sequel came out direct-to-video, it was a failure with both critics and audiences. Even star Mila Kunis denounced the film.
“Please somebody stop this,” she said in 2005. “Write a petition. When I did the second one, I didn’t know it would be American Psycho II. It was supposed to be a different project, and it was re-edited, but, ooh … I don’t know. Bad.”
