Fantasy Anime OVA ‘Mirage QUEEN Prefers Circus’ Picked Up By HiDive

0

‘Kaitō Queen’ is a series of fantasy adventure novels written by Kaoru Hayamine, illustrated by K2 Shōkai, and published by Kodansha since 2002. The Japanese animation company East Fish Studio produced an adaption titled ‘Mirage QUEEN Prefers Circus,’ an OVA directed by Saori Den that was released in July 2022.

Sentai Filmworks announced that they had acquired the license to release the OVA in the United States and would debut it on the HiDive streaming service.

“In the mood for daring heists and thrilling adventures,” HiDive said on their website. “Then we’ve got the OVA for you: Mirage QUEEN Prefers Circus (Kaitou Queen wa Circus ga Osuki) is coming to HIDIVE on Sunday, June 18, 2023…”

The voice cast includes stage actress Yuga Yamato who voices the Queen with Kazuki Kato (The Prince of Tennis) as Joker and Yuma Uchida ( Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans) as RD. The characters were designed by Kumiko Kawashima and the screenplay was written by Mariko Kunisawa. The music was composed by Moe Hyūga and the theme song “Gyakuten no Regina” was performed by the band Little Black Dress.

You can watch the trailer below:

MyAnimeList describes the synopsis as follows,

“They always steal the prey they aim for. That is Phantom Thief Queen. Gender, age, nationality unknown. Together with their partner Joker, RD, they travel around the world on the airship Troubadour. This time, the Queen is aiming for a cursed jewel, the legendary Rose of Linden. A hypnotist, an acrobat, a magician…the talented circus members challenge the Queen! What is their purpose? In order to get back the jewel, the Queen stands up to the challenge in a bold and brilliant way (or disguise). Nothing is impossible for the Queen!”

A new anime titled ‘Kaitō Queen no Yūga na Kyūka’ roughly translated to ‘Phantom Thief Queen’s Elegant Vacation’ was announced in Spring 2023.

Murderous Puppet Survival Horror Game ‘My Friendly Neighborhood’ Gets A Release Date

0

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood if you like your neighbors to be aggressively friendly sentient puppets. If that’s your bag or you’ve always wanted to blow some Muppet-looking abominations away with various weapons, then My Friendly Neighborhood is for you. And it’s coming out very soon!

Thanks to My Friendly Neighborhood‘s Steam page, we learned that the game has a planned release date of July 18, 2023. In a month, you’ll be able to take on the role of a handyman who must figure out why a long-canceled puppet show has started broadcasting again from its defunct studio.

My Friendly Neighborhood is a mix of FPS, survival horror, and some resource management. The murderous puppets can be put down temporarily with the creative weapons you come upon. Sadly, they won’t stay sedated for long. You’ll need to tie them up, or they’ll return to their terrifyingly cheerful ways the next time you pass through.

I played the My Friendly Neighborhood demo last year, and it was fun but not as engaging as Polly Playtime. The demo delivered a mix of nostalgia for the classic days of Sesame Street and Muppets while creating decent scares as the sentient puppets tried to embrace you in a deadly way. However, I didn’t come away feeling like the gameplay would be much more in-depth than the average FPS.

The variety of puppet foes was also underwhelming. Hopefully, this will be addressed in the final build set next month. The release date trailer shows off a few new enemy types, though.

Something scary is happening with everyone’s favorite Saturday morning puppet show, The Friendly Neighborhood! Play as Gordon, a repairman sent to get to the bottom of this disturbing dilemma. Fend off puppets and solve puzzles in this survival horror adventure.

Vought Updates Us On Homelander’s Upcoming Murder Trial

0

Vought CEO Ashley Barrett is here to give us an update on Homelander. The company’s favorite hero seems to be in a bit of trouble.

It would appear that vaporizing a guy’s head is wrong when he throws a can at your kid. Who knew? Homelander’s “act of heroism” is being seen as a “murder.” Can you believe it? Homelander. The leader of The Seven, a murderer? There’s no way!

Ms. Barrett is confident that Homelander will be found not guilty. She puts the blame squarely on the vicious Starlite-loving thug who attacked his son. Check out the Vought update video below for more.

Oh, don’t forget to celebrate the life of the late Queen Maeve with this official $349 action figure!

I commend Amazon for the effort they put into immersing the audience in the show’s world. However, I wish the writers would hold back a little on making The Boys as topical as possible. Escapism doesn’t always need to be an allegory for the year’s real-life talking points.

Will The Boys age and other superhero properties in 5-10 years? I returned to watch some of Season 2’s episodes and groaned at some in-your-face themes and “current year” parallels. It doesn’t feel timeless, that’s for sure. However, Season 1 is still solid.

News about the next installment of The Boys has been somewhat quiet recently—season 4 wrapped production in April 2023. However, a release date has yet to be announced. We’ll most definitely see it this year, but maybe not until the Fall.

Where does the show go from here? We know Butcher is on borrowed time. Starlight has a target on her back. Soldier Boy is back in the freezer. The Deep is … a mess. Victoria Neuman is possibly the biggest threat to both The Boys and Homelander. There’s so much ground to cover now.

Let us know your theories about Season 4 below!

As You Wish. Super7 Introduces ‘Princess Bride’ ReAction Figures!

It’s not inconceivable that a company like Super7 would want to make a series of retro-styled action figures based on one of the greatest fantasy movies from the 1980s. In fact, they have! Get ready for The Princess Bride ReAction Figures!

Wave 1 will include Dread Pirate Roberts, Fezzik, Inigo Montoya, Vizzini, and Princess Buttercup. Each $20 character, with the exception of Buttercup, comes with an accessory, including swords, daggers, and Fezzik’s boulder.

The ReAction Figures come on blister cards featuring illustrations of each character rather than the Kenner-esque still shots from The Princess Bride. This design choice makes the figures even more display worthy than if Super7 had tried the traditional retro look.

I can easily see at least two or three more waves for this series, including multiple versions of Wesley and Buttercup, along with Miracle Max, Valerie, Prince Humperdinck, the Albino, and Count Rugen.

Sometimes, Super7 makes playsets, and The Princess Bride would be the perfect property for them. A Kenner-inspired cliffside playset and maybe Miracle Max’s house would sell really well. Put some of those classic Kenner play features in there, and this could be the line that draws people back into collecting Super7 figures again.

“It’s INCONCEIVABLE that The Princess Bride wasn’t a smash hit at the box office, but thanks to home video it has become one of the most beloved cult classics of all-time! Super7 is proud to introduce your favorite Princess Bride characters as ReAction Figures

In 2021, McFarlane Toys announced a line of The Princess Bride action figures. The 3.75″ tall characters didn’t look that great. The initial photos of the action figures had less-than-great paint applications. I can’t remember ever seeing these hit store shelves, but they are currently on clearance for less than $20 through Entertainment Earth.

HiDive To Stream Sports Anime ‘Tsurune: The First Shot’ Film

‘Tsurune: The Movie – The First Shot’ is getting a new streaming home for North American audiences when it was announced that the sports anime flick will be added to the HiDive catalog. The film is directed and written by Takuya Yamamura who based it on the light novel series ‘Tsurune’ from author Kotoko Ayano and illustrator Chinatsu Morimoto.

“There’s a lot of sports dramas out there and the good ones really nail that blend of character development, team dynamics, and the thrill of competition. ‘Tsurune: The Movie – The First Shot’ is no exception and you can watch it Sunday, June 18,” HiDive said on their website.

Produced by Kyoto Animation, the movie was distributed by the Japanese film studio Shochiku and who released it in Japan on August 19, 2022.

Miku Kadowaki was tapped to join the film as the character designer with Masaru Yokoyama handling the score.

You can watch the trailer below:

His childhood friends Takehaya Seiya and Yamanouchi Ryohei swiftly agree to join, but Minato is hesitant at first. Because Minato is the rare student with experience in archery, Tommy-sensei orders him to give a demonstration, which Minato does… except his arrow doesn’t hit the target. It is revealed that Minato has developed a terrible dysfunction regarding archery.”

The film is a midquel set in between the archery anime ‘Tsurune’ and its sequel series ‘Tsurune: The Linking Shot.’ Kyoto Animation produced all three iterations of the TV series as well as published the manga.

Lord of the Dance’s Michael Flatley Gets A Biopic Series

Michael Flatley, the man who served as the face for Irish dance touring productions Riverdance and Lord of the Dance, is getting a biopic series based on his life. Titled Dancelord, the biography will be produced by StoryFirst Media, with Rod Gunner and Peter Gerwe acting as executive producers.

Variety‘s exclusive story feels like it came out of nowhere. In America, Lord of the Dance and Michael Flatley have not been at the forefront of pop culture for decades. In the mid-to-late-’90s, Riverdance made the rounds on PBS, and Irish dance was suddenly the new thing. It was overthrown by the swing-dancing fad, which also left the public’s favor just as quickly. However, overseas the Flately-led show remained popular even to this day.

Apparently, a lot went on behind the scenes, which could make for a fascinating watch. The synopsis for the show doesn’t paint a cheery picture of what Michael Flatley’s life has been like:

For every transcendent moment onstage, Flatley endures grueling hours of pain and the loneliness of the road. Taunted by the media and, at times, doubted by everyone but his fans, Flatley bounces back time and again, dancing from his heart well into middle age and transforming Irish dance forever.

The strangest news isn’t so much that Michael Flately is getting a biopic series, but who they chose to write it. Micho Rutare, whose credits include scripting Z Nation, Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus, and the Sean Austin made-for-TV movie Adopting Terror, is penning the series. Casting is ongoing, with Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens’s casting director Jessica Sherman serving in that same role.

After being fired from the tour over creative differences, Michael Flatley created Lord of the Dance in 1996. The show shared many similarities with Bill Whelan’s Riverdance score, but LotD had an overarching narrative.

Both Riverdance and Lord of the Dance still tour to this day. As of now, Riverdance’s 2023 shows are taking place in Mexico, while Flately’s production is traveling through Ireland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Slovakia.

Batgirl Finally Joins McFarlane Toys’ Batman 66 Line!

McFarlane Toys’ Batman 66 line of action figures, playsets, and vehicles have been interesting. They sell, that’s for sure. I was lucky enough to get Egghead a month ago and have yet to see him show up at stores since. The same can be said with the Batboat. The demand for affordable collectibles and kid-friendly toys is certainly high right now.

It was a gamble to start producing toys based on the classic 1966 Adam West series, but it has paid out. And now, finally, the series has introduced Batgirl. Although the figure’s head sculpt doesn’t look too much like Yvonne Craig, the artists at McFarlane Toys certainly captured all of her other memorable features.

“The Daughter of Commissioner James Gordon held a big secret even from the Dynamic Duo … that she was Batgirl™. Working at the Gotham City Public Library, she would come to the aid of Batman™ and Robin™ as needed, but even the Worlds’ Greatest Detective could not figure out who she was.

Sadly, Barabra Gordon’s batsuit is not sparkly. However, the inclusion of accessories rather than word bubbles is greatly appreciated. The next two versions of Batman and Robin McFarlane is releasing also incorporate new gadgets instead.

The new Batman and Robin figures come with oxygen masks. Robin finally gets a Batarang and Batradio. Batman only gets one weapon, but it’s the large Sonic Bat-Zooka. Also, the paint on Batman’s costume looks a bit different. The blue on the cowl, gloves, boots, and trunks looks far brighter than usual.

Kapow! The debonair millionaire Bruce Wayne may seem like your average cool cat, but you would be wrong! With the flip of a Shakespeare head bust and … to the Batcave™! Gotham City is filled with a rogue’s gallery of criminals eager to unmask the Batman™, but they are thwarted by the Caped Crusader’s own clever ways.

“‘Holy Boy Wonder, Batman!’ How lucky can orphan Dick Grayson get? He gets taken in by the wealthiest man in Gotham City, who just happens to be Batman™. He gets to live in a mansion complete with cave, gets to kick villain butt, and cruises around in the world’s coolest car.”

Each figure can be pre-ordered via Target’s online store. Yes, the figures are still at the new price point of $19.99.

Pre-order Batgirl here

Pre-order oxygen mask Robin here

Pre-order oxygen mask Batman here

Now that Yvonne Craig’s Batgirl has joined the toy line, we’ll probably be seeing her Batcycle later this year, and hopefully the Batcopter. If you’ve not scooped up the Batmobile and Batboat, I’d suggest you do. Not only are these fairly detailed toys, but they’re easy on the wallet. They can also take a beating if your kids are fans of the classic Adam West series.

Final Fantasy XVI Demo Impressions – Peek At The Beginning

Final Fantasy XVI is the next mainline entry of the ongoing series that fans have been eagerly waiting to play. Taking place in a new world with some familiar elements and a mature tone, Final Fantasy XVI is looking to be one of the better games of 2023. But while Final Fantasy fans will have to wait a tiny bit longer for the full release, Square Enix released a demo for everyone to play beforehand. Was the demo very much in line with what we’ve come to expect from the legendary role-playing series? Yes, it is, but the demo also points to many interesting things within the gameplay that fans of Final Fantasy may find intriguing.

The demo of Final Fantasy XVI was available for everyone to download on PlayStation 5. It consists of the first few chapters of the main game, which gives background on the story’s main character Clive and the world of Valisthea. Although things begin at the present day with a great war going on, the demo also goes back in time to Clive’s earlier days as a young prince. Without spoiling much, the demo introduces us to many of the faces we’ll follow in this new Final Fantasy story that will be of great importance in the final game. There’s a lot of lore and details that flesh out many aspects of this world and the politics between kingdoms.

One thing that the demo does very well is getting players accustomed to the controls and combat of Final Fantasy XVI. While the bulk of the demo is cutscenes and mild sections of exploration, things really pick up when Clive can take up a sword and get into some battles with goblins and other enemies. Fighting usually boils down to combinations of button presses, mixed in with the occasional magic attack.

Clive can attack with devastating slashes in combination with fire magic, which will not only do big damage to enemies but knock them back as well. Dodging is also key to avoiding getting hurt, while also setting up Clive for powerful counterattacks and taking advantage of openings against foes. Much of the combat feels similar to other action games like Bayonetta and Devil May Cry, with fights being fast-paced and flashy. But battles are far from easy because if you’re not careful enough you’ll get smacked hard by enemies that pack a fearsome punch.

But things get more interesting with deeper elements to the battles you get into. Staggering enemies is important when taking on tougher foes, like a giant goblin or one of the infamous Malboro enemies from the series. You’ll still do damage with attacks, but staggering foes will cause them to flinch and fall down, opening them up for damaging attacks and combos. This is important for boss battles and fights with tougher enemies that try to distract you with smaller foes. To capitalize on this, Clive has access to Eikon abilities, which are powerful attacks granted to him by the Eikon Phoenix in the game’s story. These attacks can’t be used frequently because of their cool down, but they are very powerful and perfect for dealing big damage when you stagger an enemy.

What’s also neat are the extra moves Clive can get when you level up. Finishing battles yields EXP and ability points that you can spend on new attacks. While there are definitely not enough battles to grind for levels in the demo, the final game may have plenty of opportunities for you to grind for EXP and AP to open up Clive’s arsenal. Getting new attacks definitely opens up more combo potential for you in battles, as well as lets you avoid enemy attacks easier. Dodging at the right time will give you a moment to counterattack for extra damage, which is great for unleashing some of the better moves Clive can unlock as he levels up.

More than anything else, the demo really shows just how beautiful the visuals of Final Fantasy XVI look. The game can be played in two modes, presentation or performance, which can capitalize on the type of presentation you want to see. Performance mode lets things run at a higher framerate, which is great for the action when you get into combat. Presentation mode puts an emphasis on the extra details at a lower framerate.

Regardless of what mode you decide to play in, Final Fantasy XVI looks gorgeous all around. Everything from the environments you move in, the backgrounds during cutscenes, and the characters and monsters you encounter have a high level of detail that puts many other games to shame. The lighting in every place you go to and see looks fantastic, illuminating places that have splashes of color in them while allowing the darker parts to still look foreboding and moody. Square Enix is no stranger to producing games that have a high level of polish to them, and Final Fantasy XVI is no different.

Something that Final Fantasy fans will appreciate is the Active Time Lore windows that can be accessed at almost any time. During cutscenes and gameplay, you can hold the touchpad down to bring up a menu of important information on key characters, locations, history, story lingo, and so much more. This is great for those who forget details or are confused about something during a cutscene and want to get a refresher or better insight into what is going on with the plot.

With so many characters and locations that come up in dialogue, it might be something you’ll bring up more than you realize if you want to stay up-to-date in following the game’s story. While you don’t need to use the ATL menus, they’re always around for when you need them and they aren’t intrusive when you’re watching cutscenes. The menus are easy to navigate and sort through, and you can always go back to the details they have later rather than needing to access them at a given moment.

Final Fantasy XVI is looking to be a major hit with everyone if the demo is any indication of what to expect when the game releases soon. There’s so much more to see that the demo doesn’t have, despite it being a very content-rich demo that gets everyone started in this new world for the series. The combat is very fun to play through and the story is rich with lore that will most likely keep fans busy for a long time. In addition, the progress made in the demo will carry over to the final game. You can definitely expect many people to talk about Final Fantasy XVI a lot when the full game is out on June 22nd for PlayStation 5.

Are you excited to play Final Fantasy XVI? Have you gotten a chance to play the demo yet? Let us know all of your thoughts down below in the comment section!

LRG’s Owner, Embracer Group, Announces Major Restructuring

0

Embracer Group, the holding company which currently oversees companies like Gearbox Entertainment and Limited Run Games, has just announced a major restructuring plan. The bad news was handed down directly from the CEO, Lars Wingefors.

Thanks to Smash JT for tipping us off to the open letter from the Embracer Group CEO. Wingefors laid it all out there, saying that measures need to be taken to cut costs:

The program presented today will transform us from our current heavy-investment-mode to a highly cash-flow generative business this year. It will enable us to meet the worsening economy and market reality as a strong company and it will fundamentally change our prioritization of growth with raised capital towards optimization and growth based on our own cashflows. The program will lower our net debt significantly.

The program will take place from 2023 to 2024 and will be broken out into the following phases:

The program is divided into different phases until March 2024 with focus on cost savings, capital allocation, efficiency and consolidation. The initial phase, which is initiated immediately, mainly targets cost savings across the group. The next phase, which also starts immediately, will require further analysis to determine specific actions. The last phase will focus on internal consolidation, further resource utilization and more synergies across the Group. The actions for each affected company will be implemented by the new interim COO and CSO in collaboration with each operative group CEO and management teams. Embracer currently engages close to 17,000 people and while that number will be lower by the end of the year, it is too early to give an exact forecast on this.

Of course, layoffs are hinted at in the CEO’s immediate follow-up:

It is painful to see talented team members leave. Our people are what make up the very fabric of Embracer. I understand and respect that many of you will be worried about your own position and I don’t have all the answers to all questions. I want to be clear that the decisions about this program were not taken lightly.

If I saw this as an employee, I’d be looking for a new job ASAP. This isn’t meant to scare you unnecessarily, but I’ve seen similar memos before in other industries. These statements are usually followed by an e-mail or phone call asking you to come to a meeting room where the pink slips are handed out.

Embracer Group was previously known as Nordic Games Licensing and THQ Nordic and has a plethora of great games under its umbrella, including the recently released Dead Island 2. How this will affect highly anticipated titles like Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and Payday 3 is not yet known. Considering Embracer Group owns a number of studios, like Cyrstal Dynamics, Edios, and Square Enix Montreal, there’s a possibility that these may be sold off again in the near future.

We’ve speculated that Embracer Group made the call to terminate Kara Lynne from Limited Run Games after a brony with a questionable past led a cancel campaign on Twitter. For more on the LRG fiasco, check out our interview with the company’s former community manager below.

How will the restructuring affect recently purchased companies like Dark Horse? I’m not looking forward to this. How about you?
