Tubi Brings Mock Film Posters To Cannes Lion

The Fox Corporation streaming service Tubi decided to have some fun with audiences at the Cannes Lion festival where they brought fake movie posters as part of a promotional campaign with help from Mischief @ No Fixed Address. ‘The Idea Someone Else Did’ and ‘Creative Déjà Vu’ were just a handful of the promos aimed at marketers who were present at the event.

“Created specifically for the creative ad community, the campaign will feature nine different posters for fictitious films with titles that will ring all-too-true for festival-goers, from The Idea Someone Else Did to Creative Déjà Vu, and an activation on the ground at the festival,” Tubi revealed in a statement.

Other titles included ‘Tears In My Rose,’ ‘The Lions Are Crying,’ and ‘Business As Usual.’

You can take a look at a few posters on the official Mischief Twitter:

Tubi Vice President of B2B Marketing Cynthia Clevenger said, “On the heels of our latest Upfront-timed trade campaign, featuring short films geared towards the advertising community, we wanted to create content specifically for Cannes attendees, highlighting the sometimes irreverent experiences we all share at the festival.”

“Tubi is the fastest-growing free ad-supported TV streaming service in the U.S. because of our foundation in ad tech and our massive hyper-personalized library, which has something for everyone. We hear from our users all the time that they ‘feel seen,’ and we hope to exude that same sentiment to the ad community heading to France this month,” she added.

Tubi will also be hosting several panels to discuss the streaming and television industry. They are letting participants know that they can purchase or win copies of the posters.

The tongue-in-cheek marketing ploy also includes the titles ‘Show Me The Receipt: The Dilemma Of The 25 Euro Beer,’ ‘The Economy Class,’ and ‘Posing As A Lion.’ Tubi declared that they have something for everyone “even ad people.” Tubi recently signed a deal with Lionsgate to stream titles in their film library.

Batman Rejects Bruce Wayne In Upcoming DC Black Label ‘Gargoyle of Gotham’

0

Bruce Wayne is no longer part of the equation. In an upcoming DC Comics Black Label miniseries, Batman will reject his Wayne heritage and become a new kind of Dark Knight in ‘Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham.’ The story will have artists Rafael Grampá and Mat Lopes on board as the creative team for all four issues.

DC Comics said in a statement, “Available just in time for Batman Day (Saturday, September 16), Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham brings Grampá’s twisted vision of both the Dark Knight and the city of Gotham to life in a tale that reaches its icy black tendrils into the deepest and darkest corners of human nature to leave you gasping for breath—and begging for more!”

The story takes place in “a Gotham City where every day feels darker and more irredeemable than the last, Batman makes a definitive choice—to kill off the Bruce Wayne identity for good and embrace the cape and cowl full-time. But though he knows the streets of Gotham, Batman will soon come to find that he hardly knows himself. A serial killer is on the loose, and while the murder victims seem random at first, every clue draws Batman closer to the terrifying truth—that they are all connected, not just to each other, but to him as well. When an all-new rogues gallery of utterly depraved villains begins to emerge from the depths of the city, Batman will have to contend with the very nature of evil—including that which lurks in the darkest corners of his own heart—to face what is coming for the city he has sworn to protect.”

DC also revealed a variant cover of the first issue from David Finch:

Frank Miller, Jim Lee, Paul Pope, and Priscilla Petraites will also be creating variant covers of the first issue.

0

The fan-favorite animated series ‘PRIMAL’ is returning to Adult Swim for a third season. The series, created and directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, has entered production with most of the original staff returning.

“Combining artistry, emotion and pulse-pounding action, the first two seasons of the series followed a caveman at the dawn of evolution as he forms an unlikely friendship with an almost extinct dinosaur. After bonding over unfortunate tragedies, they ostensibly become each other’s only hope of survival until a final standoff becomes fatal,” Warner Bros. Discovery said in a statement.

“The second season of “Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal” reached nearly 4 million viewers on Adult Swim last year, ranking as a top 10 animated series on cable in P18-49 and among the top 5 most watched Adult Swim original series on linear. On Max, “Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal” is the 6th most popular Adult Swim series since the platform launched domestically. Outside of the US, the series is the 2nd most popular Adult Swim series since launch,” they added.

Tartakovsky expressed his excitement saying, “It’s happening!! ‘Primal’ has become a contagious disease that I don’t ever want to cure. Every episode flows out like an unstoppable force beyond my control. Prepare yourselves ‘Primal’ fans for Season 3 is coming!!!”

The show was launched in 2020 for its premier season and the second season arrived in 2022.

You can watch the trailer below:

The premise explains that the show is set, “in an anachronistic and fantastical prehistoric world, the premise is a bond between a Neanderthal named Spear and a female Tyrannosaurus Rex named Fang as they struggle to survive, encountering various dangerous fauna and people that live in their world while also encountering different creatures and Iron Age homo sapiens.”

The series has won several awards including the Outstanding Animated Program at the 2021 Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards and the Outstanding Achievement for Directing in an Animated Television/Broadcast Production at the 2021 Annie Awards.

MyAnimeList describes the synopsis as follows,

“To the outside world, Hanabi Yasuraoka and Mugi Awaya are the perfect couple. But in reality, they just share the same secret pain: they are both in love with other people they cannot be with.

Hanabi has loved her childhood friend and neighbor Narumi Kanai for as long as she can remember, so she is elated to discover that he is her new homeroom teacher. However, Narumi is soon noticed by the music teacher, Akane Minagawa, and a relationship begins to blossom between them, much to Hanabi’s dismay.

Mugi was tutored by Akane in middle school, and has been in love with her since then. Through a chance meeting in the hallway, he encounters Hanabi. As these two lonely souls spend more time together, they decide to use each other as a substitute for the one they truly love, sharing physical intimacy with one another in order to stave off their loneliness.”

Fuji TV produced a live action version of the series in 2017 directed by Shogo Miyaki and Shunsuke Shinada that ran for twelve episodes.

Exoprimal Second Beta Gameplay Impressions – Dino Survivors

Capcom has a fascination with giant monsters lately, and it’s not just coming from their Monster Hunter series that people love. Exoprimal aims to put you and your buddies against legions of dinosaurs, while an evil artificial intelligence lurks in the shadows. But that’s not all, while your team of five will team up against attacking dinosaurs, other teams will also stand against you in the midst of the chaos. The first beta test from Capcom gave everyone a look at what to expect from the full game, the second open beta lets more people dive into the dinosaur-hunting action. But this new beta isn’t the exact same thing as the previous one, even if you never got to play the first time around.

In the beta, everyone can play the same online multiplayer Dino Survival mode. This pits two teams of five players against each other in a PVE and PVP setting, where you need to fight dinosaurs and face off against the other team at the end. You need to get through the tutorial that the game forces you to play first before jumping online with everyone. This is a little annoying but the tutorial gives a lot of helpful insight into the game’s exosuit classes and abilities. Utilizing them is key to warding off the attacking dinosaur legions and powerful boss battles.

If you played in the beta the first time around, the controls for both console and PC are the same. Playing on PC will feel good for those already accustomed to shooter games with a mouse and keyboard setup. On consoles, the controls will still feel very good, especially when you’re running around and attacking groups of dinosaurs that swarm you. Some of the button inputs for certain abilities might be tougher to hit when the action gets hectic, especially when you don’t notice that your character’s super ability is active. It will definitely take some getting used to trying to get the right timing for your suit’s class abilities, whether you’re a damage dealer or support class.

Speaking of which, the second beta has more exosuits available to choose from, with variations on the different classes. The Assault class has four variations that give access to various weapons and abilities that focus on taking out dinos and dealing damage. If you like using rifles or injuring dinosaurs from a distance, there’s definitely something for you here. The Tank class is exactly as it sounds, playing the tank of the group to absorb damage and aggravate enemies towards you. You also have a lot of firepower on hand with any of the variations, despite being slow when moving around. And finally, the Support class aids the team and hinders enemies in different ways. Each variant of Support lets you either boost the health and abilities of your allies, while also being a problem for dinosaurs and enemy teams in the area.

Though all three classes play well and can be useful in ways that are unique, they can also be complemented by the Rig equipment you choose to take with you. Rigs give you extra equipment that can pack an extra punch against dinosaurs or give you an extra ability to help out with movement and protection. This includes a shoulder canon, portable barriers, an extra jump boost, and even some area-effecting abilities. Rigs aren’t class-specific, so you can mix and match them with different class variants to see which are the best ones to use. They can help give an extra push when things get dire against swarming dinosaurs, or even an edge against players trying to hinder your team.

Matches online can be fun to play when you have a good team with you. Dino Survival works in multiple phases, where you must complete objectives along the way. First, the team gets tasked with eliminating dinosaurs that appear to attack you, which are usually smaller dinos brought together into one massive swarm. After a few times, you’re pitted against stronger dinosaurs and eventually, one big dino-boss, which can be a triceratops and even a tyrannosaurus rex. The idea is to finish these as fast as possible and get to the final objective, which is to escort a case to a specific location. During this, not only will you be fighting dinosaurs that appear, but the opposing team is doing the same thing. Your team needs to be the first to escort the case to the objective and then finish an upload to win the match.

Dino Survival can be very fun to play, provided everyone pulls their weight when completing objectives. If one person ends up not attacking enough or supporting the team, everyone will fall behind and allow the opposing team to get ahead. You’re not messing with the other team until the very last objective, where you can attack each other directly. For the most part, these matches are PVE up until you’re escorting the case, to which it becomes mildly PVP. The final game might have a more PVP-proper mode that is competitive, but this is an interesting twist on both approaches to online multiplayer. Getting into games is pretty fast, even for the beta, so you won’t be waiting a long while to find a team to play with.

On the surface, Exoprimal is pretty good. The emphasis on teamwork is what makes the game fun, despite some parts venturing into competitive territory. It will take some time to find the most ideal uses for the different exosuit classes, but you can definitely get a good feeling of what works and what doesn’t the more you play. Who knows what other crazy dinosaurs we might encounter with it when Exoprimal launches on PC and consoles on July 14th, 2023.

Have you tried out the Exoprimal second beta? How do you feel about the game letting you battle legions of hostile dinosaurs? Tell us your thoughts in the comment section down below!

Review: The Blackening – Edgy Awkward Horror Comedy

Humor is a very subjective thing, but we often recognize when it is done right or not in films. The Blackening is a dark comedy that walks the line between funny and awkward with varying results. It relies on the knowledge of modern-day politics and racial discussions for the jokes to land, which may or may not be successful for some audiences. But while its self-awareness and willingness to push limits on the humor of race discussions are interesting, the movie loses itself in a predictable plot and awkward moments that just end up not being funny. Not even scenes that are suspenseful and legitimately scary can pull the film back from the brink of mediocrity.

The Blackening follows a group of old college friends that get together for a reunion in a cabin in the woods, where things go very wrong after they find a mysterious board game. The game is called The Blackening and has a Sambo anti-black caricature displayed on it, which has its players answer trivia about black history and entertainment. Getting a question wrong causes someone to be killed or something bad to happen, which is done by a killer who wears a sambo mask that hunts players down. After finding some of their friends were killed earlier, the group is forced to play the game, while trying to outwit the killer and survive the night.

Each character we meet within the friend group has an element of an archetype from varying cinema depicting black characters, with some being more interesting than others. The loud best friend, the eccentric gay man, the “wanna-be” thug, the strong yet handsome guy, and even the nerdy fool that nobody likes. Often this is played for laughs, which breaks up the tense moments but is done to an extreme that completely stops the momentum the movie builds up. Does everybody in the cast act well with the material they’re given? Yes, but even their talent isn’t enough to make the majority of jokes funny or the plot of the movie work well.

The movie is very self-aware to the point that it begins to make fun of itself and the tropes that are constantly used with black characters in movies. Sometimes the timing is right and the jokes are genuinely funny, but more often the jokes don’t land well. Instead, they are incredibly awkward and feel like they’re from another film entirely, pulling you out of the moment happening. The jokes that do work are witty and play off the moment they’re in, as opposed to the lines that get preachy or heavily rely on current-day politics and banter.

But what about the horror elements of the film? Is The Blackening at least scary enough or suspenseful enough in some moments when it needs to be? Not as much as you would expect. Not only are there very few kills in the movie overall, but there’s only one kill in the beginning that is handled in a more horrifying fashion compared to everything else. In addition, the board game that the movie is named after is completely forgotten.

Everything becomes a generic horror comedy that feels average once the movie drops the board game entirely. The killer that chases everyone throughout the movie uses a crossbow on his victims, which loses its threatening presence very early on. And when things are revealed and begin to wrap up, the movie will feel very predictable and disappointing. Certain plot points end on a genuinely funny note, but are often ruined immediately by the follow-up scenes as the movie goes on.

If anything else, The Blackening will only make you laugh in some moments and be forgettable when you finish watching it. The humor will definitely not be for everyone, especially those who aren’t already well-versed in black culture, modern political discussions, or even horror cinema. Though witty in some spots, the majority of The Blackening will feel like a mediocre story that ends up being predictably silly and shallow. You might be able to enjoy this film when getting together with a few friends and some drinks to go with, but there’s very little here to stick with you beyond that.

Have you gotten a chance to watch The Blackening yet? Do you think audiences will enjoy this kind of horror comedy? Share your thoughts about the movie in the comments down below!

Here is the teaser trailer for Netflix’s One Piece:

Iñaki Godoy was onstage wearing an outfit similar to his character Monkey D. Luffy, but without the hat, with a very friendly and excited attitude as with the other cast members.

Trying to hold back tears as she was explaining what it felt like to be part of something huge, Nami actress Emily Rudd said, “I have grown up with anime. I’ve been an anime lover since I was a kid. And being a part of One Piece has truly been a dream for me. I feel so lucky to be living my dream and I cannot wait for you guys to see the dream come to life!”

Mackenyu, who plays Roronoa Zoro, said, “it’s about Luffy and his journey to finding the biggest treasure in the world, with us, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji.”

The One Piece Crew

Explaining the character that he plays, Godoy very cheerfully responds with, “Well, I play Monkey D. Luffy. A young man with a big dream to sail around the world with his Nakamas, find the ultimate treasure, the One Piece. And become the king of the pirates!”

The other cast members gave their own summaries for the characters they play.

“I play Roronoa Zoro. A bounty pirate hunter, determined to become the world’s greatest swordsman.”

Roronoa Zoro

“I play Nami. She’s a clever little cat burglar, who’s very good with a bow staff. And she’s got a couple of secrets as well and ends up coming along with these boys and keeping them in line.”

Nami

Jacob Romero Gibson said, “I play the legendary Captain Usopp, who will one day be the brave warrior of the sea. And I’ll say just about anything if it helps save the people I care about, you know?”

Netflix Reveals The First Look At Avatar The Last Airbender Live Action Series

At the Netflix Tudum: A Global Fan Event in Brazil, a first look was revealed for the Netflix live action adaption series of Avatar: The Last Airbender. There’s been scarcely any news about it since the last major known news of the confirmed casting of the four main leads in August 2021. This after the original creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko left the production in August 2020 after having differing views and ideas on the direction the Netflix series should go.

Here is the first look video:

Along with the first trailer, Netflix released character photos of each of the four main characters.

Gordon Cormier as Aang
Kiawentiio as Katara
Ian Ousley as Sokka
Dallas Liu as Zuko

Asked what about the series she was most excited for the fans to see, Kiawentiio, who plays Katara, was really excited about the bending and special effects, as well as episode 5 being her favorite and she can’t wait for everyone to see it.

The actor playing Sokka, Ian Ousley described some of his many favorite memories while on filming the series for almost a year. Some favorite moments included haircut day where they got to transform into the characters, as well as getting to hold and unsheathe his boomerang for the first time. And getting to meet his favorite character Oppa, even if he was terrified while flying on him.

Dallas Liu, who plays Zuko, explained how he was not only living his expectations to the supporters but also to himself. Because Zuko spent most of his journey accompanied by Uncle Iroh, Liu spent almost every day on set with Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, who plays his uncle. He learned so much from Lee that to him, Liu sees Lee as just like his character Uncle Iroh.

Asked what it means to participate in this story and to be the Avatar character Aang, Gordon Cormier said “I feel like it’s going to bring everything you know and love about the original series back to life, and hopefully just bring in a bunch of new fans who have never heard of the show before into this universe. And to me that’s pretty exciting. I’m a fan of the show personally and I’m just excited for this as you guys are.”

The Avatar: The Last Airbender segment begins at 1:52:13

Given what we’ve heard in the past about the story possibly taking place in modern day times, the photos seem to contradict that idea, as they look like it takes place in the time period you see in the animated series. But what do you think so far? Let us know in the comments!

Review: Stan Lee Documentary – A Marvelous Life

The world of comic books, and by extension movies, would simply not be what it has become today without the influence of Stan Lee. As one of the pioneers of comic book storytelling and business practices, Stan Lee is synonymous with anything related to Marvel Comics. The 2023 documentary, simply titled Stan Lee, chronicles the early life and career of Stan “The Man” Lee and how his work was part of the foundation for what Marvel would turn into decades later. It’s a walkthrough of a man with an incredible career that continues to impact both the entertainment world and the personal lives of many people around the world to this day. And while the documentary is a perfect overview of Stan’s life with Marvel, it comes very close in ways that are both surprising and heartfelt.

The Stan Lee documentary is meant to be an homage to Stan’s 100th birthday, with the bulk of the documentary covering the genesis of Marvel Comics. Much of what was happening with Stan Lee before and at the start of his time with Timely Comics, which Stan would rename Marvel Comics later, coincides with many important historical events over various decades. The documentary covers Stan’s birth right before the start of World War II and goes through many other points of American history. This includes the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, and even the space race. As those major historical events happen in the backdrop of the documentary, Stan’s life is that of a man working hard to have a steady job and eventually begin a family.

Surprisingly, the documentary gets very candid about some aspects of Stan’s family and personal life. Though everything is kept within the context of when Stan was getting into the comic business, there are some things that are touched on that have never been mentioned in other documentaries. This same level of honesty extends into the later decades when Stan Lee began working with comic legends Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko. Great lengths are taken to highlight much of the work that was accomplished by Stan’s collaboration with the artists at comics, despite a lot of the foundation and core elements of the company extending from Stan.

Even more surprising is some of the controversy from when Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby left Marvel Comics. The documentary doesn’t take a side, nor does it downplay, why both artists left the company and why they had conflict with Stan Lee. Instead, there’s a lot of praise given to the work that both artists did before and after Marvel, as well as emphasizing how the relationship between all of them was very beneficial for everyone.

There are a lot of historical images, audio and video clips, as well as television segments used throughout the documentary. Some of the older pictures from the 1930s and 1940s are interesting, despite being very few of them in comparison to later decades of Stan’s career. The entire documentary is narrated by Stan Lee using a large variety of audio clips pulled from many sources. Everything about this documentary is 100% Stan Lee with input from others only when it is necessary. There are quotes and clips from people like Jack Kirby and many of Stan’s other colleagues of the day, as well as tons of television and live segments that show Stan speaking with a variety of people in each decade. But what makes this documentary feels so deep is how the collage of audio still manages to have Stan’s candid voice and inviting tone. It’s not only Stan’s own words describing nearly everything featured in the documentary but done in great detail, delivered a man who told many stories throughout his life. It just feels very right.

In the middle of this, however, there are statues or doll-like creations of scenes that are mentioned through Stan’s dialogue. Places like the office where a young Stan Lee worked as he came up with the pen name that would go on to define him. It’s a nice way to visualize important places like this, as well as give a timeless element to many of the themes that get reinforced by Stan throughout the documentary. However, it’s not used as much in the later sections of Stan’s life, right before he becomes the editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics.

One thing that is heavily emphasized is how much Stan Lee was an important part of what made Marvel different from the competition as far back as the early 1960s. Even more so than Stan Lee being around during the creation of characters like Captain America and the renaming of the business to Marvel, Stan was helping push the limit of how comics would be viewed in pop culture. A lot of the major turning points for comic stories could be traced back to specific stories that Stan Lee wrote during his time at Marvel.

This would include tackling topics of real inequality and bigotry happening in the world, the inclusion of various people of all colors and races into stories, facing the harsh truths of drug use, and even the problems normal people faced every day. All of this would change comic books in the years that followed, but none of it would’ve been possible, or as widely accepted by everyone, had it not been for Stan Lee pushing for everything. The documentary doesn’t just explain it but shows just how much Marvel Comics was really supporting important topics like that as early as 1962.

The final sections of the documentary round off with the cameos that Stan Lee was known for in Disney Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. Unfortunately, this is the one place where the documentary falls short and misses a giant portion of his story. While most of the MCU is featured in a major way, the Spider-Man movies and early Marvel adaptations are completely skipped over. A big section of the documentary covers the creation of Spider-Man and the impact of his comics, but nothing is mentioned about the release of the first Spider-Man movie or its sequels. This could be partially due to those films being created by Sony Pictures and not Disney, but it’s hard to know the exact reason why because nothing is said about them.

It’s a major omission in the context of the documentary because of how much Stan Lee’s story is tied to Spider-Man’s creation. It would’ve been fine to have a small bit of Stan commenting on the first time Spider-Man hit the big screen, or the idea of any of the Marvel Comics characters getting adapted into live-action. Other documentaries have highlighted Stan’s influence and effort to push the Marvel characters into live-action adaptations as far back as the 70s, and eventually into the 2000s. But to skip over it completely ignores a major part of the story of Stan Lee.

The Stan Lee documentary is a very well-constructed guide through the life of one of the comic industry’s most influential figures. It has a lot of historical context and backstory that feels relevant, tying back to the things we know today. As a way to celebrate the 100th birthday of the man who helped build Marvel Comics from the ground up, it’s a great watch that everyone will enjoy. While there might be more complete or detailed documentaries about the late and great Stan Lee, this one would definitely get the seal of approval from many fans across generations… Nuff said.

Cain Dog Actor from Red Dead Redemption 2 Passes Away

Fans of Red Dead Redemption 2 may remember the dog named Cain. Players could meet the dog after progressing the story far enough to when Dutch and his gang set up camp in Clemens Point. Players who got to see Cain get adopted after appearing in the area fell in love with the digital canine. But while everyone could enjoy seeing Caine in the game, the real-life dog actor that portrayed Caine through motion capture recently passed away.

The in-game dog we meet in Red Dead Redemption 2 was played by the dog Einstein Barnes. Einstein was owned by Jason Barnes, who previously worked at Rockstar Games as an animator when Red Dead Redemption 2 was still in development. Through a post on Instagram, Jason announced the passing of his dog Einstein and gave a brief eulogy about spending time with him outside of developing the game.

“Einstein was truly one of a kind. From the moment we met, we formed a deep bond, and it was clear that we were destined for countless adventures together… You possessed an uncanny intelligence, earning you the name Einstein; even if, at times, the name felt like a joke…”

Because of the work that had gone into bringing Cain to life in Red Dead Redemption 2, Einstein was credited alongside everyone else on the development team in the game’s end credits. The dog originally started helping Jason work on the game’s motion capture after initially doing a fitting for the dog mo-cap suit that Rockstar had.

Barnes spoke with PC Gamer after Einstein’s passing and detailed what it was like back then working with his canine companion. “It started with a few tests and next thing we knew; he was cast as Cain… I got to work with him on set as his trainer which is such a fond memory. We did some clever stage offset and such to get the stunt of Micah kicking him as well as the ones with Micah chasing him off. He was obsessed with lasers so we often used those to get him to run a specific direction.”

Members of Rockstar also took to the comments of Jason’s Instagram post to share memories and kind words. Many loved the dog and appreciated the opportunity to get to work with him during the game’s development. One team member posted a kind message about Einstein how much they enjoyed working together with him. “Einstein was a truly special dog, and I’m very grateful to have gotten to share that special mo-cap time with him, he wore that suit well…”

In addition to many other Rockstar employees sharing their condolences, another company expressed theirs over Twitter. InXile Entertainment, the company where Jason is currently the animation director, posted on their official account about the passing of Einstein. “Sad news to share, our Animation Director’s very good boy we showed in a mo-cap suit back in 2021, Einstein, has passed away. He was always a joy to have in the office, and we’re already missing him greatly.”
