First Ever Video Game Gets Approved by the FDA

Over the years, video games have been the subject of much debate on how it makes a difference in children and teenagers. Will it teach them addictive behaviors? Will they become anti-social? Will it destroy their brain cells?

What if video games were used for medical purposes?

One particular company is using the gaming technology specifically as a medical tool to help kids who have certain medical conditions.

Last year, on June 15th, 2020, Akili Interactive made history when the FDA website  announced that it permitted marketing of the first game-based digital therapeutic device to improve attention function in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

On May 26th of this year, Akili Interactive, maker of EndeavorRx, the first and only prescription video game treatment, announced $160M in combined equity and debt financing. Akili is a pioneer of a new class of medicine and treatments that are not only effective and clinically-validated but that deliver amazing experiences to patients. Akili also closed a credit facility for up to $50M with Silicon Valley Bank that provides for an optimal capital structure.

“Akili set the bar high when we set out to challenge the status quo of medicine in 2011. Since then, we’ve developed a completely new treatment category that has the potential to help hundreds of millions of people living with cognitive impairments,” said Eddie Martucci, PhD, Akili’s co-founder and CEO. “This latest round of funding enables us to take another meaningful step towards delivering on this promise to patients, and fully realize the potential of digital treatments. Beyond treating disease, digital therapeutics of the future will be data-rich, adapt to the unique needs and preferences of each user, deliver amazing experiences, and even integrate into our everyday lives. We look forward to continuing to make the future of medicine a reality for patients.”

EndeavorRx Trailer:

The EndeavorRx app is a digital treatment indicated to improve attention function as measured by computer-based testing in children ages 8-12 years old with primarily inattentive or combined-type ADHD who have a demonstrated attention issue and should be considered for use as part of a therapeutic program.

Evaluated in over 600 children with ADHD across 5 clinical studies over a 7 year period, the EndeavorRx treatment uses sensory stimuli and simultaneous motor challenges designed to target areas of the brain that play a key role in attention function.

On the EndeavorRX website, you will find step by step instructions on the process of a child being prescribed this video game.

The schedules are set for how many weeks or months this video game will be prescribed, depending on the needs of the child. They do stress that this video game prescription is not meant to replace any sort of medication the child may be on, but to instead work in combination.

Here are three testimonial videos:

This could be another fun way for someone with ADHD to develop skills that are more challenging to overcome. What do you think? Do you think you would consider looking into this for your child?

Dark Horse Comics To Make The Jump Into Video Games

Dark Horse Comics published some of the greatest comics of the 1990s. The Mask, Star Wars, Hellboy, and Aliens. So many memories. Oh, how I miss the days when Disney didn’t own everything, and Dark Horse published stuff that enhanced the IPs rather than burying it.
Can Dark Horse do to gaming what it did to the comic book industry? Well, we’re about to find out. The publisher has announced that Dark Horse Games (DHG) is the company’s official digital and gaming arm. Yes, the comic book publisher with several beloved IPs in its pocket is going to start making and publishing games!

Dark Horse Games (“DHG”) is the games and digital division of Dark Horse Comics.

Our mission is to bring joy and entertainment through Dark Horse Comics’ portfolio of over 425 story driven, diverse and unique worlds and characters, by bringing them to games.

Popular and well-known evergreen IPs include Hellboy, Frank Miller’s Sin City and 300, Umbrella Academy, Polar, Lady Killer, Emily the Strange, Usagi Yojimbo, Resident Alien, and many more.

We believe key partnerships with top game companies for our popular IPs is the optimal path to create the best gaming experience for players. DHG is in active discussions with the world’s top gaming companies to develop games with our IPs to be released over the next several years and across all platforms (mobile, PC, console, and cloud).

DHG’s first party games will focus on refreshing older and less established IPs as gaming first IPs. DHG will produce and release multimedia projects in conjunction with our games. DHG is in active discussions with the world’s top game co-development studios and content production studios.

I am genuinely excited to see what becomes of this. Remember when that Sin City game was canceled years ago? Remember when we only got one Mask game for the 16-bit consoles? Remember that bad Hellboy game on Playstation? DHG can now fix all those mistakes! Maybe. Let’s hope.

Telltale’s Batman and EA’s Battlefield 4 Are Free On Prime Gaming

0

Did you know that your Amazon Prime subscription also gets you free games? Yup. Prime Gaming throws you a few bones each month. Did you also know that you can subscribe to a Twitch channel for free? You could be a buddy and subscribe to mine. Throw me a bone.
No. Don’t do that. I hardly ever stream. I do, however, suggest you check out Sophia Narwitz’s channel if you want to see someone actually play a game rather than sitting in a hot tub.
What you really should do is check out the free games you can get this month. Two of the bigger names include EA’s Battlefield 4 and Telltale’s Batman series. The only caveat with Battlefield is that you’ll also have to download the EA platform known as Origin. I’ve used it a few times. It isn’t bad, just necessary.
Battlefield and Batman aren’t the only titles that are free with Prime right now. Check out the nine other games you can get below.

Free games and subs aren’t the only perks. There’s also a ton of loot available for various other games, including Fall Guys, GTA Online, Warframe, and Smite, to name a few. Here’s a screenshot of some of what’s on offer right now:
About Prime Gaming:

With Prime Gaming (included with your Prime membership) unlock instant access to tons of exclusive content for your favorite games, a rotating collection of free PC games, and a free Twitch channel subscription…each and every month.

If you’re going to sign up for Prime, a lot of the loot for games requires you to log in to either your Steam, Origin, Ubisoft, XBOX, Switch, or Playstation account. So, get ready to link a bunch of accounts to a bunch of other accounts to take advantage of the free stuff.

Come Float With Mezco’s Talking Pennywise The Dancing Clown

There was always a fear that the new IT movies would overshadow Tim Curry’s amazing performance as Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Luckily that didn’t happen. Sure, the new Pennywise may be a bit creepy, but Curry nailed goofy and sinister aspects of the character in the book. The ’90s version may not have exactly matched what Stephen King had originally written, but this look has remained iconic for over thirty years.
Over the past few years, we’ve seen the classic Pennywise emerge in various forms, from statues to articulated action figures. The one thing they all were missing, you ask? A voice chip!
Mezo is fixing that issue by releasing a 15″ tall talking Pennywise based on the Tim Curry version. The bright yellow suit, blood-red hair, and the orange pompom balls are all there.

Your every fear – all in one deadly enemy.
From the depths of the sewers beneath Derry, MDS Mega Scale presents Pennywise, the dancing clown!
Pennywise is your worst dream come true and he has a lot to say! Press the button discreetly hidden on his back to hear him say a total of 6 phrases including “I’m Pennywise, the dancing clown!” and “They all float and when you’re down here with me, you’ll float too!”
From his fire-red hair to his oversized clown shoes, the shapeshifter is dressed to kill in his brightly colored clown suit with pom-pom detailing on the front.
MDS Mega Scale IT (1990): Talking Pennywise stands 15” tall and features 11 points of articulation. He’s packaged in a window box, perfect for display.

Mezco is only showing us two of the six phrases. I really want to know what else Pennywise will say. Maybe one of the following will make it in? “Beep! Beep! Richie!” “Kiss me, fat boy!” Or my favorite Pennywise quote is, “You’re an errand boy, sent by grocery clerks to collect a bill.”
Pre-orders are open now at Mezco. Pennywise will set you back $98 and will ship sometime between December 2021 and February 2022.
Why is no one producing the spider version of Pennywise? Sure, the thing looked silly in the 1990 TV miniseries, but it’s all part of the fun that made the film memorable. Give us Spidey-Wise!

‘Skyfall’ Screenwriter Opens Up About His Fear For The Future Of James Bond

The latest entry of the James Bond film ‘No Time To Die’ has suffered several delays in release in part due to the pandemic lockdowns. During this laboring, Amazon acquired the film company MGM Studios, and with them, the license for the late Ian Fleming’s British superspy. This raises more questions for the long-running espionage franchise.
‘Skyfall’ screenwriter John Logan is a name you might know if you are a movie buff. Besides writing for James Bond, he has also worked on such screenplays as ‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’ and ‘Alien: Covenant.’
In an op-ed for The New York Times, Logan broke down why he thinks Amazon’s acquisition of MGM could have a negative impact on 007.
“What happens if a bruising corporation like Amazon begins to demand a voice in the process,” he said. “What happens to the comradeship and the quality control if there’s an Amazonian overlord with analytics parsing every decision? What happens when a focus group reports they don’t like Bond drinking martinis? Or killing quite so many people? And that English accent’s a bit alienating, so could we have more Americans in the story for marketability?”
“From my experience, here’s what happens to movies when such concerns start invading the creative process,” he wrote.
Logan warns, “Everything gets watered down to the most anodyne and easily consumable version of itself. The movie becomes an inoffensive shadow of a thing, not the thing itself.”
“That’s why we don’t have a mammoth Bond Cinematic Universe.” He continues, “with endless anemic variations of 007 sprouting up on TV or streaming or in spinoff movies. The Bond movies are truly the most bespoke and handmade films I’ve ever worked on. That’s why they are original, thorny, eccentric, and special. They were never created with lawyers and accountants and e-commerce mass marketing pollsters hovering in the background.”
James Bond has had his stints where audiences seem to lose interest in the British spy, though the character always manages to bounce back. Could “corporate” interests negatively affect 007? Possibly. Corporatization has had a positive impact on franchises such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe while the DC Extended Universe has suffered because of it.
Logan himself notes, “The quality differential can vary wildly, project to project.”
Whatever the case, time will tell if Logan is correct with his predictions.

Iron Studios Gets Nostalgic With ’80s A Massive D&D Cartoon Statue

Iron Studios, known for creating detailed statues from several popular comic book and fantasy properties recently hosted a stream showing off new and upcoming products. The slate of releases set for late 2021 and into 2022 includes a number of fan favorites, with one really sticking out.
The broadcast is over an hour long, but the statues are spread out enough that you can easily scan through and find what you’re looking for. No doubt you’ll stop right where I did when you see a certain massive dragon.

The stream showed off several properties from Marvel, DC, Harry Potter, and more. The one thing that really caught my eye was this thing.

Iron Studios
Yes, that is indeed Tiamat battling the stars of the 1983 Dungeons & Dragons cartoon. What a friggin’ callback! The statue is HUGE. Not just big, but massive! This must come in at over 24″ tall. The base alone could take up an entire coffee table. It’s just big! The host says it is at 1:20 scale.
It’s not yet available for pre-order, but that should happen in June.
I cannot wait to see the detail on this thing when it becomes an official product. The Dungeons and Dragons cartoon is fondly remembered, but oddly dismissed when it comes to merchandising. Retro has been the thing for Funko, Super7, and others, but the interdimensionally displaced kids never get the attention they deserve.

Well, there was that Brazilian car ad that somehow got all of the characters spot-on in live-action:

What statues from Iron Studios’ stream are you interested in? What IPs would you like to see them license in the future? Come to think of it … what other massive diaramas should that team of artisans tackle? The Death Star prison cell shootout? Gandalf VS the Balrog? Let us known in the comments.

PlayMobil’s To Release More ‘Back To The Future’ Playsets and Vehicles

Somehow I didn’t know that Playmobil was expanding on their already sweet Back to the Future toy line. My daughter loves the first BTTF film and was overjoyed when I managed to get her the Time Machine earlier last year. That thing has been on several adventures, most of them ending with the doors to the Delorean ending up torn off. Doc and Marty have been through some savage times, bro.
When I was over at Figures.com, they posted a review about three new playsets. One of them adds a much-needed accessory that was missing from the original release of the Delorean.
The new sets, which are available on Amazon, include:

I love that Playmobil gets right to the point with the titles. No clever wording, just flat out telling us what it is.

Playmobil
Unsure about picking these up for yourself or your kids? I’ll give you a mini-review of Playmobil’s Delorean and Courthouse playset.
The Time Machine is a great toy for kids. It’s durable. It lights up. It can convert to hover mode but lacks a Mr. Fusion (which one of these new sets remedies). There is a surprising amount of detail on the car, but some small pieces like the tubes and hook can be easily lost.

The Courthouse / Clocktower playset was a letdown. It came with many cool accessories, including different Marty McFlys, Doc Brown, and Biff. The set also included Doc’s giant amplifier and some other props and signage from the first BTTF film.
However, the Clocktower and Courthouse were all made out of cardboard. Thin cardboard. Once it’s all together, it looks nice. After a couple of hours of a kid playing with it, tears and creases become common problems. I was expecting possibly cheap molded plastic with basic paint application for the price, but this was a paper model. Great accessories, though.
Playmobil doesn’t look to be going down that road again. The Hoverboard Chase playset does not come with a papercraft 2015 Courthouse. It comes with what looks like a plastic pond and more detailed accessories. The BTTF3 set does have backdrops, but nothing like the first advent calendar’s Courthouse.
What are your thoughts on Playmobil’s venture into classic 1980’s properties? Are these really for collectors or kids? Let us know in the comments.

Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and 3070 Ti Release Very Soon!

0

If the chip shortage wasn’t bad enough, here come two all-new GeForce graphics cards from Nvidia! We’ve been having a tough time just getting the previous generation of cards. So, maybe this will help free up that demand.
We learned via Cnet that Nvidia will be issuing two new GeForce cards to the masses on June 3rd and June 10th! RTX 3080 Ti (6/3) and 3070 Ti (6/10).

The GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, launching June 3rd, is our new gaming flagship, running games 2X faster than the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, and 1.5X faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti at 4K. And the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti supercharges our most popular RTX 30 Series GPU with more CUDA Cores and G6X memory, making it 1.5X faster than the previous-gen GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER.

NVIDIA

Look at all those ups and downs! There sure are a lot of them. Yep. I will not pretend that I’ve followed the progression of graphics cards since the Radeon days of the mid-2000s. Show me pretty videos at 4K, and I’ll buy. Yes, I’ve reached that stage as a gamer.
Well, not being content with graphs, Nvidia showed off the RTX 3080 Ti running Doom Eternal at 4K with ray tracing. Check it out:

Here we have a showcase max performance and image quality through Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS):

Both GPUs will be available for purchase as custom boards — including stock-clocked and factory-overclocked models — from top add-in card providers such as ASUS, Colorful, EVGA, Gainward, Galax, Gigabyte, INNO3D, MSI, Palit, PNY and Zotac. Limited-edition NVIDIA Founders Edition boards will also be available. Look for GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and GeForce RTX 3070 Ti GPUs at major retailers and etailers, as well as in gaming systems by major manufacturers and leading system builders worldwide

Now for pricing. The 3080Ti will be $1,199. The 3070Ti comes in at about half of that, $599. The trick will be, of course, finding these when they launch. Nvidia’s previous cards are typically available on NewEgg’s shuffle. So, these may be as well. Keep checking back there to see if the graphics cards pop up.
Will you be dropping all that coinage for a new graphics card? Let us know in the comments.

Ubisoft Says ‘Far Cry 6’ is Political But Totally Not About Cuba … Maybe?

0

Yes, Far Cry 6 will be political, but not in a way that makes a statement about the real world for some reason. That’s the message that came down from Ubisoft this past week. They want that cake, but they also want the cake to be nondescript and edible.
The open letter from Navid Khavari, the game’s narrative director, is below in its entirety.
Our story is political.
A story about a modern revolution must be. There are hard, relevant discussions in Far Cry 6 about the conditions that lead to the rise of fascism in a nation, the costs of imperialism, forced labor, the need for free-and-fair elections, LGBTQ+ rights, and more within the context of Yara, a fictional island in the Caribbean. My goal was to empower our team to be fearless in the story we were telling, and we worked incredibly hard to do this over the last five years. We also tried to be very careful about how we approached our inspirations, which include Cuba, but also other countries around the world that have experienced political revolutions in their histories.
In our approach we made sure to seek creators and collaborators for our team who can speak personally to the history and cultures of the regions we were inspired by. We also brought on experts and consultants to examine the game story multiple times over the course of the project to make sure it was being told with sensitivity. It is not for me to decide if we succeeded, but I can say we absolutely tried.
The conversations and research done on the perspectives of those who fought revolutions in the late 1950s, early 1960s, and beyond are absolutely reflected in our story and characters. But if anyone is seeking a simplified, binary political statement specifically on the current political climate in Cuba, they won’t find it. I am from a family that has endured the consequences of revolution. I have debated revolution over the dinner table my entire life. I can only speak for myself, but it is a complex subject that should never be boiled down to one quote.
What players will find is a story that’s point-of-view attempts to capture the political complexity of a modern, present-day revolution within a fictional context. We have attempted to tell a story with action, adventure, and heart, but that also isn’t afraid to ask hard questions. Far Cry is a brand that in its DNA seeks to have mature, complex themes balanced with levity and humor. One doesn’t exist without the other, and we have attempted to achieve this balance with care. My only hope is that we are willing to let the story speak for itself first before forming hard opinions on its political reflections.
Thank you for reading.
Navid Khavari
Narrative Director, Far Cry 6
This reminds me of the weird about Far Cry 5. Remember when gaming journos were confused that the game wasn’t a MAGA murder simulator and people outside of their bubble had different political beliefs than them? Some people strived to make universal social and political struggles hyper-focused on this one small period in American history.
What did we get out of that game? A nut who used broken people and drug addicts to take over a town just in time for a nuclear holocaust. Boy, many people were pissed that it wasn’t Orange Man Bad: The Video Game.
The narrative director can go on and on about what Far Cry 6 is and isn’t going to be about, but the proof will be in the final product. If you want to ask difficult questions and possibly give an answer, then do just that. However, don’t expect anything with teeth.
Don’t tell me that you want your team to be fearless while shying away from the inspiration of your game’s plot. Embrace it. Make a statement even if some people don’t agree with it. Not everything has to be morally vague.
Can all the topics he lists at the start be handled well in an FPS? Probably. Do I trust Ubisoft to handle them with tact and a competent script? Not really. I’ve been let down by Ubisoft in multiple aspects, whether technical bugs (like losing 8 hours of gameplay in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla due to a still unfixed problem) or boring narratives (like Far Cry Primal).
If you need a laugh at how out of touch some people are when it comes to anything that isn’t drenched in Coastal Elitism, check out the hilariously ratio’d video from GameSpot.

What do you think about political topics in your entertainment? Has the hyper-politicized landscape we live in killed escapism? Should companies like Ubisoft even be making any statement in their product? Let us know in the comments.

Paul Walter Hauser Talks ‘Cobra Kai’ Future, His Failed Chris Farley Biopic, and ‘Cruella’

Paul Walter Hauser has been a household name since appearing in the television drama ‘Kingdom,’ going on to appear in ‘I, Tonya’ and Clint Eastwood’s ‘Richard Jewel.’ He has most recently appeared in the Disney reboot ‘Cruella’ about the titular villain. One of his recognizable characters is Stingray from the Netflix series ‘Cobra Kai.’
Hauser sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss his future in ‘The Karate Kid’ sequel show and other projects.
When asked if he would return to the show, he replied, “I hope so! I love that show.”
“Those guys hit me up all the time to check on me. They’re very sweet, and they want to know what I’m up to and how I’m doing,” he said. “But there are so many characters in the Cobra Kai universe that I never want to take precious screen time away from those main characters. So if they have a way to plug me in in the future, I’m all for it. I’m just waiting on the phone call.”
Hauser also opened up about his failed Chris Farley project, one he was so passionate about, he even contacted Farley’s family to get their blessing on filming the biopic. Unfortunately, it never came to fruition.
“I wanted to do a Chris Farley movie where he’s in rehab for half of the film, and for the other half of the movie, he’s doing his SNL stuff and his movies,” Hauser explained. “I think I have a really great take on that story, but I’m trying to lose weight and I’m trying to redefine myself as a person of healthy choice-making, and as an actor. So the days of doing Fatty Arbuckle, Chris Farley or Ignatius J. Reilly in a Confederacy of Dunces movie have a very small time window, and it’s getting smaller by the week.”
When asked about his inspiration for the character of Horace for ‘Cruella,’ he cited Bob Hoskins as a source for his English accent.
“I studied Bob Hoskins quite a bit in preparation for this role,” Hauser said. “I was given two options by the dialect coach Neil Swain; he said to me, ‘Do you want to go for a Bob Hoskins or a Ray Winstone?’ He gave me those examples, and I couldn’t shake Bob Hoskins as Smee from the movie Hook. I just felt like that was dead on and what I had to do. So I studied that, I did it and I’m happy really, really happy with how it turned out. I don’t think it’s perfect, but it’ll fool some people who don’t know my work very well. That would be kinda cool.”
