Playmates Versus Series Now Pits TMNT Against Street Fighter!

Playmates Toys is on a roll with their TMNT VS series. Over the past year, we’ve seen the mutant brothers face off against Cobra Kai and the Power Rangers. Now, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will spare with Capcom’s iconic Street Fighter characters.
We learned from Figures.com that the first images from the new Versus series had been released. These initial images show Ryu challenging Leonard and Michelangelo facing off against Chun-Li. In total, there are plans for four sets, one for each Turtle. Playmates Toys intends to pair Raphael with Guile and Ken with Donatello.
The figures are on the same scale as the previous two packs. Each character is 6″ tall. Based on the images below, only the Turtles appear to have accessories. Don’t expect any effects parts like a Hadouken or sonic boom. These sets are due to show up on store shelves this Fall, and the price point will probably be around $50 each.
The paint job used for the Turtles oddly contrasts the Street Fighter characters. Leo and Mikey look like a cross between the original Mirage Comics and the ’87 cartoon with a heavy emphasis on shading. Meanwhile, Chun-Li and Ryu are basic, with no shading or washes applied.

Each set has a theme or discipline. Here’s the breakdown of what each:
The Leaders Face-Off:

  • Ryu VS Leonardo

Authority VS Exuberance:

  • Chun-LI VS Michelangelo

Strength VS Strength:

  • Guile VS Raphael

Restraint VS Intellect:

  • Ken VS Donatello

It’s a concept that I’m surprised has been used before between the two franchises. So while the Marvel VS Capcom series is most likely dead in the water, a TMNT VS Street Fighter game could renew interest in the classic crossover fighting game genre.

Groovy! Earthworm Jim Toys Are Back!

Phew. I remember being in a Service Merchandise store the first time I saw Playmates Earthworm Jim figures. I think this was about the time his series had just launched on The WB and a couple of years before that awful N64 game. It’s too bad that the franchise faded into a state of semi-obscurity. Well, there is that Intellivision Amico debacle, but I’m staying far away from that.
Thankfully, studios like Premium DNA are around to resurrect the bionic suit-wearing invertebrate. Yes, the same people who brought us all those Santa figures now have the license to create toys based on EWJ’s games. We spotted this first wave over at the Big Bad Toy Store.
The first four figures include Jim, Psy-Crow, Professor Monkey-For-A Head, and Bob the Killer Goldfish with Henchcat #4. Each figure is priced at $54.99, and this wave is expected to arrive during Q2 of 2023.

Jim comes with the following accessories and parts:

  • 2 Head sculpts
  • 3 Pairs of hands
  • 3 Snot figures
  • Blaster
Premium DNA
There’s no way that Professor Monkey-For-A Head Figure is standing independently. Better get a base for this guy. Here’s what the Professor comes with:

  • 2 Head sculpts
  • 3 Pairs of Professor hands
  • 3 Pairs of Monkey hands
  • 3 Beakers
  • Banana blaster
Premium DNA
Bob comes with two types of pedestals, while #4 has these accessories:

  • 3 Head sculpts
  • 3 Pairs of hands
  • Fish bowl gripping hand
  • Armor
Premium DNA
Psy-Crow is a figure that’d benefit from a base with an articulating arm. Honestly, how often did you ever see him standing on the ground? He’s a flyboy!

  • 3 Head sculpts
  • 3 Pairs of hands
  • Removable helmet
  • Hook blaster
  • Bare feather arms
  • Bare feather tail feathers
Premium DNA
Considering the first two Earthworm Jim games were full of amazing animations for the title’s hero, it’d be a waste not to give the guy more faces. So, premium DNA offers a pack of heads and a worm body for $31.99!

The Eighth Wonder Of The World Returns To Super7’s ‘Ultimates’ Series!

Without Andre the Giant, professional wrestling would not have become the mainstream success we know it as today. Sure, sports entertainment would still be a regional powerhouse, but it was the Eighth Wonder of the World who gave it the push it needed.
As he appeared in his legendary match at Wrestlemania 3, Andre is Super7’s latest Ultimates action figure. This is a follow-up to the toymaker’s earlier Yellow Trunks version of the pro-wrestling icon.
The Black Singlet version of Andre should be shipping out in Spring 2023. He can be pre-ordered right now for $55.00.

Other wrestlers might need flashy costumes or outlandish personas to attract attention, but when you’re the Eighth Wonder of the World, your mere presence is enough! This 8” highly articulated Andre the Giant ULTIMATES! figure features the wrestling legend in his iconic black singlet, and includes interchangeable heads & hands and a beer can accessory. To say that this ULTIMATES! figure would be a giant addition to your collection is an unavoidable pun, but it’s also a completely accurate statement.

The Giant comes with the following accessories:

  • 3x Interchangeable heads
    • Neutral head
    • Intense eyes head
    • Grimacing head
  • 8x Interchangeable hands
    • 2x Gripping hands
    • 2x Chopping hands
    • 2x Fist Hands
    • 2x Open hands
  • 1x Beer can

Just one can of beer? Tales are told that the Giant usually had 24+ beers after a match!
I’d like to see an everyday version of Andre, outside of the squared circle, dressed in his Sunday best, with a few crates of wine and maybe a few six-packs of beer.

I only ever got to meet Andre one time. Unfortunately, it was not long before he passed away. Although you could tell he was in pain and unable to walk, the Giant was nonetheless kind to fans and made what time he could for those who saw him.
What are your favorite memories of Andre’s days as a professional wrestler? Let us know in the comments section below.

Gotham City Villains Get Spotlight in ‘Batman – One Bad Day’

Some of Batman’s greatest foes are taking the spotlight in a new series of one-shots from DC Comics. ‘Batman – One Bad Day’ will highlight a Gotham City rogue in each issue with comic book creators like Tom King, Mariko Tamaki, Javier Fernandez, Jordie Bellaire, John Ridley, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Cam Smith, and others are assigned to the various entries.
The Riddler, Two-Face, The Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Catwoman, Bane, Clayface and Ra’s al Ghul are some of the villains who are getting the spotlight in the first batch.

“Tom King and Mitch Gerads reunite in a new 64-page one-shot comic this August! Edward Nygma’s meticulous rules and systems go out the window when he kills seemingly at random, but Batman isn’t buying it! This tense intellectual thriller sees Batman unravel as he tries to decode the Riddler’s motivation,” DC Universe said of the first issue.
Two-Face will be featured in the second issue, a fitting tribute to the villain.
“Heads or Tails, when it comes to Two-Face, Batman always loses,” they said. “Is Harvey Dent back to save Gotham City? In a new 64-page one-shot comic this September, Mariko Tamaki and Javier Fernandez’s tragic noir Two-Face epic will flip that iconic coin…on its head?!”
“When the Penguin’s criminal empire is stolen by a former associate, Batman faces both Cobblepot and THE UMBRELLA MAN on the burning streets of Gotham! John Ridley and Giuseppe Camuncoli’s ONE BAD DAY one-shot arrives this October,” DC added. “Save your sympathies, Batman and Robin! Years ago, Gotham City experienced a winter so icy that Mr. Freeze could live without his containment suit! Gerry Duggan and Matteo Scalera deliver a cold new take on Mr. Freeze this November.”
Of course, Selina Kyle is getting her own entry.
“A brooch Selina Kyle’s mother once pawned for pennies is now part of a high-bid auction! The stakes are personal, and Catwoman will steal it back at any cost this December in G. Willow Wilson and Jamie McKelvie’s ONE BAD DAY one-shot,” DC Comics explained.
Perhaps Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, Mad Hatter, and others will get their one entry into this series.

Sony Exec Hints At Spider-Man’s Film Future

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ was a massive hit with critics and audiences, making over a billion dollars at the box office when it premiered in December 2021. Since its release, there have been questions as to how a sequel would work. Tom Holland is the one currently wearing the webs in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as part of a deal that Sony Pictures has to “loan” Spider-Man to Disney.
There has been rampant speculation on a fourth film in the MCU or if Sony Pictures will expand their own Spidey movie franchise. Holland and director Jon Watts have been avoiding directly answering on the possibility of a return.
Sony Chairman Tom Rothman recently had a conversation with Deadline about the future of the web-slinger in film that shed some light on the matter.
“We have our Marvel business, which breaks into three tranches,” he explained. “There are the Spider-Man movies, and we’re currently at work on two Spider-Verse sequels to our Oscar-winning animated movie, with Lord and Miller. We hope to get working on the next Spider-Man movie.”
When asked directly if Watts, Holland, and Zendaya would be making a comeback, Rothman said he hoped that they would get “That whole group, we hope.”
“Then there are movies I would call adjunct to the Spider-Man universe. That’s Kraven, which we’re shooting now, and Madam Web, which we’ll start in the spring with S.J. Clarkson directing. And then there are many Marvel characters that are standalone. When I took over Sony, it was said, oh, Sony has no IP. Not true. We actually had fantastic IP,” he replied.
Sony has confirmed that ‘Kraven the Hunter,’ ‘Madam Web,’ ‘El Muerto,’ and a third ‘Venom’ film are all at some stage of development as part of the “Sony Spider-Man Universe.” The most recent release ‘Morbius’ starring Jared Leto was not received well at the box office.

Head Back To Mojoworld With This Marvel Legends 4-Pack!

Forget the Multi-verse; give me Mojoworld! Maybe Mojo would be too on the nose for how Disney is nowadays. You know, gobbling up everything in order to achieve total entertainment dominance. Oh, I wish that Fox deal had never gone through…
No crying over spilled adamantium, I guess. While we may not see Mojo on the big screen, we can still bring him into our homes via Hasbro‘s latest Marvel Legends Mojoworld box set.
This $131.99 Marvel Legends pack comes with Mojo, Dazzler, Longshot, and a cute little Wolverine. The first three figures are in the 1/12th scale typical of the Marve Legends line. The Mutant couple comes with interchangeable hands, weapons, and effects pieces. Mojo comes with interchangeable heads and hands.
As one would suspect, the set comes in a themed box that Mojo would approve of. The boxes the figures will go in now are themed after an old TV, remote control, and a copy of the MW Guide (TV Guide) booklet.
Expect this 4-pack to arrive in our dimension in December 2022.

The Mutant Assassin Psylocke Gets Her Own Premium Format Figure

I think a lot of people forget the complicated story behind X-MEN‘s Psylocke. You know, the whole Kwannon and Betsy Braddock bodyswap thing. It would make for an interesting MCU series if Disney stopped focusing time and money on things like Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk. Maybe someday, when the Mouse needs to bring audiences back in, we’ll get that.
Regardless of whatever plans await her in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Psylocke continues to be a welcome presence in the collectibles market. Her iconic purple bodysuit and psionic energy weapons always make for dynamic art pieces. Such is the case with Sideshow Collectibles’ newest Premium Format Figure.
Purple suit? Check. Psionic blade? Check. Katana? Check. Hot as hell? Double-check! This statue of Psylocke measures 21″ tall and comes with a few display options in the form of interchangeable arms/weapons. Psylocke can either be reaching for her katana or brandishing a psionic dagger with her right hand.
The PFF is priced at $625 and will ship between April and July of next year.

The polystone Psylocke Premium Format Figure is fully sculpted and features a dynamic paint application created with the scene’s thematic lighting in mind. She wears her iconic ’90s blue bodysuit with a large red sash fluttering from her waist. Psylocke also carries a sheathed katana, her left hand resting on the weapon in anticipation of her next strike. This skilled mutant fighter also comes with a swap-out right arm reaching to draw her katana blade, adding to her arsenal of display options. With detail at every angle of the sculpt, this Marvel Comics collectible is sure to be the centerpiece in any collection!

I totally forgot that Psylocke appeared in the Apocolypse X-Men movie. I mean, it’s Olivia Munn … so there’s nothing memorable about that. Unfortunately, she also appeared in X-MEN 3. The only way you’d know is if you listened to Brett Ratner’s commentary track.
She appears for a few seconds as an evil mutant (for whatever reason), and that’s it. I believe she’s also sporting the mark over her eye that she had in the comics after her vicious battle with Sabertooth.

Ron Howard’s Animated Debut ‘The Shrinking of Treehorn’ Heading To Netflix

Ron Howard is making his Netflix animated feature film debut with ‘The Shrinking of Treehorn,’ an adaption of the 1971 children’s book written by Florence Parry Heide and illustrated by Edward Gorey. The movie has been in development since 2019 with the animation studio Animal Logic and Howard’s Imagine Entertainment handling the production.
The movie was originally going to be distributed by Paramount Pictures under their Paramount Animation. Still, after a series of delays, Netflix announced that it would make its way onto their streaming service.
“Netflix has picked up ‘The Shrinking of the Treehorn,’ an animated musical film set in New York City during the holidays,” the streaming service said in a press release.

With Howard directing and producing, screenwriter Rob Lieber, who previously worked on ‘Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day’ and ‘Peter Rabbit,’ is handling the writing duties.
Imagine Features President Karen Lunder told Variety in 2019, “This is a company that’s known, as are Brian and Ron, for having original storytelling at the highest level, be it features, television or documentaries.” She added, “These divisions have been evolving. To work with Animal Logic so closely, where they have such ingenuity and expertise, has been really exciting.”
Wikipedia describes the synopsis as follows,
“Treehorn is a young boy who begins shrinking one day. The book opens with the line “Something very strange was happening to Treehorn,” and the boy soon discovers that he is getting smaller when he cannot reach the candy bars and bumble gum he has hidden on a previously accessible shelf. (No reason for his shrinking is ever given in the text.) When his parents comment on it, they say, “Maybe he’s doing it on purpose, just to be different.” In the end, Treehorn returns to his normal size.”
Two sequels followed the first book, ‘Treehorn’s Treasure’ in 1981 and ‘Treehorn’s Wish’ in 1984.
This comes on the heels of the news that Netflix was canceling serval animated projects, including the Meghan Markle-produced project.

Stranger Things: The First 8 Minutes Of Season 4 And WETA’s Epic Minis!

Stranger Things is soon coming to an end. Although there may be spin-offs, the story of the kids from Hawkins, Indiana, will close out with the fifth season. We’re rapidly approaching that time. It has been an exciting ride with an impressive first season, but the series has yet to capture that lightning in a bottle again with subsequent outings. Perhaps, this preview of Season 4 will change that?
Through the Stranger Things YouTube channel, Netflix has released the first eight minutes of the fourth season’s initial episode. We return to the Hawkins National Laboratories before the events of season one, where multiple children are displaying their psychic abilities. One particular child, Ten, is undergoing some tests when all hell breaks loose.

In addition to seeing the first eight minutes of the latest season of Netflix’s iconic series, the Stranger Things cast came together to do a recap of Seasons 1 through 3.

When it comes to more tangible Stranger Things stuff, there’s WETA’s Mini Epics line of figures. Previously the workshop known for its work on the Lord of the Rings franchise made minis of Season One’s Eleven and Demogorgon. The next batch of Mini Epics figures will include Mike, Will, Lucas, and Dustin, according to Figures.com.
Each Mini is $49.99, and they stand roughly 6″ tall, or just short of that. The Mini Epics are made of vinyl. These should arrive during Q1 next year.

Look for the newest season of Stranger Things to premiere on May 27th exclusively on Netflix.
I cannot believe it has been six years since the series first aired. I was fortunate enough to be on set in 2016 to interview the cast and crew. You can listen to those interviews below:

Mezco’s Deluxe Amazing Spider-Man Hits All The Classic Comic Hallmarks

Believe it or not, there was once a time when Spider-Man’s universe was a lot simpler. Long before the multi-verse and when everyone had “spider” powers, Peter Park was the one and only Spider-Man. The most significant demand on Parker was balancing his time between school, work, Mary Jane, and battling a collection of increasingly weird villains.
Mezco wants us to go on a little trip down nostalgia lane with their Deluxe Edition Amazing Spider-Man One:12 Collective figure. This 6″ tall wall-crawler sports the classic red and blue suit and is packed with loads of accessories familiar to fans of Spider-Man comics from the 1960s and ’70s.
Spider-Man is priced at $120 and will ship out sometime between December ’22 and February ’23.
