REVIEW: Sonic Frontiers IS GOOD

0

Ladies and gentlemen! I am happy to announce that maybe hell has frozen over, because Sonic Frontiers is a good game! Since being released on November 8th, I have only recently been able to set some time aside to finally play it. But within the hours I have progressed through, I have had such a fun experience. The graphics, gameplay, story and challenge are all phenomenal. So those who just wanted to know if this game was good, it is, and you can go click off and go enjoy YouTube or twitter banter. As for those who want a more detailed explanation, I come to deliver.

The game immediately starts with Eggman screwing with things and causing mayhem to ensue. Meanwhile, Sonic, Tails and Amy go looking for the chaos emerald on a nearby island, only to be trapped in a digital dimension. With only sonic able to successfully break free, he must venture on this island and find a way to free his friends from a better version of the Metaverse.

So pretty so pretty so pretty so pretty!

This is truly an open world for you to explore. Ancient relics and strange architecture litter the landscape along with classic rails and jump pads. The world tempts you and rewards you to struggle and venture to platforms almost seemingly out of reach, and graces every player with fun ways to maneuver around. When not soaking up the sights or trying to get an out of reach item, you will be indulging in battles against robotic-alien looking opponents that are native to the island.

Varying in design and skill, you will learn to be creative with attacks to take down many of them. But your abilities will be put to the test when facing off against the Kaiju sized “Titans”. Though if you encounter one and don’t feel up to the challenge, it is an open world, just do what Sonic does best and run outta there and come back when prepared.

Cue Attack on Titan music

In this game, Sonic can level up and unlock abilities to help you take down the tougher opponents and get to new areas. To upgrade attack and defense, you need to acquire seeds dropped by opponents or hidden away in puzzles, and give them to Hermit Koco. For upgrading speed and ring capacit,y you will find yourself catching small rock like creatures, called the Kocos and bringing them to Elder Kocos. To obtain new skills you can find skill points in the world and use them in the skill tree. The tree itself is simple and can be molded to your playstyle, such as unlocking the Combo Mix ability which will do the combos for you, but at the cost of your attacks being weaker. Some skills will be needed to progress further, so don’t be afraid to take some time to look for skill points.

The kocos are are rather cute and they are many quests to do involving them. Though I’d prefer having chaos and a return of the chao garden, the kocos do bring their own flare. When standing idle for a few seconds, every Kuco you have captured will appear and eagerly stare at you like puppies. Many also have various unique features and designs which are nice and I find the noises they make to be very adorable. (still wishing for chao garden)

They are cute, but I miss the Chao gardens0

To progress the story, you will not only have to fight Titans, but also have to enter the digital world. To get digital, you will activate pillars which send you to a classic sonic racing challenge, complete with grading system. There will be a set of requirements for every challenge, and accomplishing them rewards you with items. Challenges are more like common sonic games with architecture, atmosphere and opponents which gives a Sonic Adventure feel. Speaking of Sonic Adventure, some pillars will send you to a Big the Cat fishing minigame. It’s an open world game, of course there would be fishing. Catching fish will let you buy useful items from Big. Some of these treasures will also reveal more of the story’s elusive plot.

Personally, I have been playing the Nintendo Switch version, and found no loss in graphics. The quality is nice and the gameplay is superb. The only troubles I have encountered are rare camera issues and the occasional object pop ins. I have noticed things abruptly popping in the sky or in the grass. It’s not that distracting and I’d have to really be looking for this issue to notice. A patch in future updates will most likely solve this problem, so I don’t have much worry.

Truly, this game has been such a treat to play. There is no doubt that the Sonic Team poured their hearts and all their love into this game. Everything was placed with care. Noticing how certain cutscenes are shown and the digital scenery shows inspiration from Sonic Advance. The team took care to add in side scrolling parts to implement the more classic Sonic gameplay. I also discovered that Ian Flynn, current writer of the Sonic IDW comics, was a lead writer of the game. This game was made by those who love Sonic and wanted to bring out the best parts of the franchise.

So before I end this review and spend the rest of my day playing more Frontiers, I urge not only Sonic fans, but anyone curious, to definitely give Sonic Frontiers a try, cause I can guarantee it is good.

MK’s Noob Saibot and Smoke Make For An Awesome Statue

0

PCS is back on the Mortal Kombat train. Previously, the maker of high-end collectibles gave us a sexy classic Jade and a venomous Reptile. Now, we’re getting two for the price of one with a combination Noob Saibot and Smoke statue!

Noob Saibot and his cyborg buddy Smoke are ready to … enchant you with friendship. Yeah, that’s it. There’s no violence here. These good boys will spill not one ounce of blood. They’re just here to make balloon animals, sing songs, and maybe remove your spinal column. I mean, give you a soothing back massage.

Nah, this $850, 22″ tall and 15″ wide collectible features the duo as they’re about to f’up an opponent. This is one of those statues you put on a shelf with custom LED lighting. I typically don’t buy MK merchandise, but this one may get my money. It can be pre-ordered through Sideshow, but don’t expect these two to arrive until sometime between May and July 2023.

The fully sculpted Noob Saibot statue measures 22” high and 15” wide as this armored wraith harnesses the powers of darkness against his enemies. Kneeling on the scorched ground, Noob Saibot is framed by the tortured, transient cyborg known as Smoke. Together these two Mortal Kombat antagonists form a deadly scythe, shuriken, and smoke-wielding assassin team.

The history of Noob Saibot is fascinating, if not a bit messy, as with most parts of the Mortal Kombat lore these days. He was the original Sub-Zero (Bi-Han) and was first playable as a hidden character in 1993’s MKII. His first incarnation was an all-blacked-out version of Scorpion. Smoke was much of the same, even though he was a robot. The exception is that his character model was a black/gray palette swap of Scorpion with smoke effects coming off his body. Both characters changed and evolved over the various sequels and the eventual reboot.

Check out the video below for the first incarnations of the two:

Become Mumm-Ra, the Ever-Living, With This Replica!

0

Have you ever wanted to dress up as a mummy and terrorize a group of annoying cats? Or do you prefer to yell at your incompetent and grotesque henchmen? Well, then, Factory Entertainment is getting ready to release just the right tool to get the job done: an official replica of Mumm-Ra’s helmet!

The helmet of Mumm-Ra is created from durable fiberglass and is lined with synthetic leather. I didn’t know the evil undead being was concerned with the welfare of cows. The flowing bandages are aged and individually wired to be posed to your liking. I’m going to guess that the twin snakes are made of resin because the official listing doesn’t go into that much detail.

Factory Entertainment makes it clear that the replica is for display purposes only.

Mumm-Ra’s helmet is expected to arrive in the Summer of next year. The replica is limited to only 750 pieces, but the $499.99 price tag may mean it doesn’t sell out as quickly as other recent props we’ve seen on the market. If money is no object, Factory Entertainment also offers a full-size replica of the Sword of Omens for $599.99. So drop those subtle hints to your family this holiday season that you want these high-end ThunderCats collectibles.

This 23-inch high replica helmet is crafted from durable fiberglass, with metal and resin accents. Synthetic leather was selected for the neck protector and inner cap lining. Fabric ribbons accentuate the exterior of the helmet and have been aged to imitate ancient tomb wrappings. Each one is individually wired, allowing it to be independently posed, and when fully extended, this replica stretches an impressive 35-inches wide. Each replica also includes a metal display stand, an individually numbered cast metal plaque and a certificate of authenticity.

I hope Factory Entertainment produces the Sword of Plun-Darr to accompany this helmet or maybe Excalibur. What do you think? Let us know below.

Celebrate DREDD’s 10th Anniversary With This Vinyl Soundtrack

0

Judge Dredd breached his way into theatres ten years ago. While the Pete Travis-directed adaptation of the lawman from the 2000 AD comics was superb, it failed to be a box-office success. Nevertheless, the film has amassed an enormous following and a comic book sequel. In celebration of the film’s tenth anniversary, Mondo is releasing a 2XLP vinyl of the movie’s soundtrack.

The LPs contain the original soundtrack by Paul Leonard-Morgan and remixes/neo-classical piano reinterpretations of the score. These bonus tracks are from Mogwai, John Tejada, P.T. Adamczykm, and Paul Leonard-Morgan himself! The main soundtrack looks to be pressed on black/gold/red vinyl, while the remix is on a watery blue mixture. The 2XLP will go up for sale on November 16th at noon Central Time.

Paul Leonard-Morgan’s score for DREDD encapsulates the dystopian, noisy, and overcrowded mess of Mega-City One. From the grime of the street trash to the dusty separation of the Street Judges, you can feel it all as the score’s first track builds up, and then you’re thrust from the Cursed Earth into the chaotic mess of thousands of square miles of the city.

Original soundtrack by Paul Leonard-Morgan. Artwork by Luke Preece. Mondo exclusive pressed on 2x 140g Dredd and Slo-Mo vinyl. Includes a bonus disc of remixes and neo-classical piano reinterpretations. Initial pressing housed inside a spot-varnished slipcase.

For our readers in the UK, did any of you attend last Thursday’s Thought Bubble at the Belgrave Music Hall? Mondo was present with an exclusive Eco-Vinyl pressing of the DREDD soundtrack. Tell us about the festivities and if you picked up the new record. We’d love to hear about it.

We’re hopeful that DREDD will get a big-screen sequel or a TV series. There are so many stories to tell in Mega-City One, and they don’t all have to revolve around Judge Dredd at all. Just give us something based on the film’s grim world. Please!

Amazon May Lay Off 10,000 Employees Starting This Week

0

The holidays should be jolly, but about 10K Amazon employees may find themselves on the unemployment line before Thanksgiving. The story appeared earlier today in The New York Times with the rumor that Amazon could lay off workers from three specific divisions: devices organizations, retail, and human resources. No direct source is cited, with the NYT only saying that this information comes from people who were “not authorized to speak publicly.”

Since we have no concrete evidence of which divisions will be impacted by these rumored cuts, we need to look at Amazon’s current projected growth. As recently as 2021, Amazon had as many as 15 new distribution centers in the planning and construction stages. While I cannot say if any of these have been axed since I was last associated with the projects, a new distribution center is just about to open, not too far from me. So, I doubt the cuts will affect the hourly staff at these shipping locations. According to the NYT, these centers employ 1.5 million people worldwide.

Perhaps Amazon is trimming the fat at the top to recoup some of the cost of The Rings of Power‘s supposed billion-dollar budget. Nah, that’s just me being cynical. However, this wouldn’t be the first time a major online business chopped staff. Last week Meta terminated the employment of 13% of its 11K global staff. This was announced in a memo from Mark Zuckerberg himself.

As of just an hour ago, the company formerly known as Facebook slashed an additional 726 positions in the company’s Seattle and Bellevue offices. The total number of employees in this region was about 8,000. Surprisingly, the Meta Store in Burlingame, California, is still open.

What do you think of all these cuts? Is it truly because of the economy, or is something else in the works? Let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

‘Temple of Doom’ Actor Ke Huy Quan Defends The Indiana Jones Sequel

‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’ was widely released in theaters on May 23, 1984. The feature film directed by Steven Spielberg was a smash hit, even going to win the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. It has come under scrutiny by some in the media for what they consider “problematic” depictions of Asian communities.

During an interview with the Guardian, actor Ke Huy Quan, who played the character of Short Round, defended the film and dismissed the notion that it is in any way “problematic.”

“We’re talking about something that was done almost 40 years ago. It was a different time. It’s so hard to judge something so many years later. I have nothing but fond memories. I really don’t have anything negative to say about it,” he said. “Spielberg was the first person to put an Asian face in a Hollywood blockbuster. Short Round is funny, he’s courageous, he saves Indy’s ass.”

Quan also noted that Short Round was a “groundbreaking” character for Asian representation adding, “That was a rarity then. For many years after that, we were back to square one.”

You can watch the iconic “night camping” scene between Indy, played by Harrison Ford, and Short Round.

Actor Amrish Puri, who portrayed Mola Ram in the film, defended the movie in his 2013 autobiography saying, “…it’s based on an ancient cult that existed in India and was recreated like a fantasy. If you recall those imaginary places like Pankot Palace, starting with Shanghai, where the plane breaks down and the passengers use a raft to jump over it, slide down a hill and reach India, can this ever happen? But fantasies are fantasies, like our Panchatantra and folklore. I know we are sensitive about our cultural identity, but we do this to ourselves in our own films. It’s only when some foreign directors do it that we start cribbing.”

Harrison Ford is set to reprise Indiana Jones for a fifth film which has faced many delays in production.

Netflix To Stream Live Chris Rock Comedy Special

Comedian and actor Chris Rock will become the first to be featured on a solo Netflix live comedy special. This event will be the second live show presented by the streaming service.

“Netflix announced today that legendary comedian, writer, director and actor Chris Rock will be the first artist to perform live on Netflix for the company’s first-ever live, global streaming event. The comedy special is set to stream in early 2023,” they said on their website. “The live event builds on Netflix’s legacy of leadership in live comedy. Netflix is a Joke: The Festival was the biggest live, in-person event in Netflix history, taking place in Spring 2022. The unprecedented event sold more than 260,000 tickets, featuring more than 330 comedians performing 295 shows across more than 35 venues in Los Angeles. The festival also featured the first-ever stand-up show at Dodger Stadium.”

The streaming service previously collaborated with the ‘What to Expect When You’re Expecting’ star previously hosted the Netflix special “Tamborine” in 2018.

Netflix Vice President of Stand-up and Comedy Formats Robbie Praw celebrated the announcement, saying in a press release, “Chris Rock is one of the most iconic and important comedic voices of our generation.”

“We’re thrilled the entire world will be able to experience a live Chris Rock comedy event and be a part of Netflix history. This will be an unforgettable moment and we’re so honored that Chris is carrying this torch,” he added.

Chris Rock previously wrote and directed the 2014 comedy film ‘Top Five’ which he also starred in with Rosario Dawson.

Netflix Is A Joke featured many comedians included Kevin Hart, Wanda Sykes, John Mulaney, Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Bill Burr, Natalie Palamides, Marlon Wayans, Pete Davidson, Patton Oswalt, Gabriel Iglesias, Amy Schumer, Margaret Cho, Iliza Shlesinger, Taylor Tomlinson, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Ms. Pat, and several others.

Takara Tomy’s Diaclone Vehicles Are Back!

Before the Transformers, there was Takara Tomy’s Diaclone toy line. Launched in 1980, the sci-fi toys included transforming vehicles. Some morphed into sentient robots, while others changed from one vehicle into another. Eventually, the figures got a makeover to become what we in the States now know as the G1 Transformers.

Takara Tomy has decided to reboot the Diaclone line with updated versions of the more well-known vehicles. First up is the Dia Fighter. In the early 1980s, the Dia Fighter was the most common Diaclone found among my friends. This blue and red spaceship could transform into the DiaTrain by smooshing it together.

When you’d press down on the silver air intake vents on the top of the craft, the spring-loaded mechanics inside would cause the wings to unfold and the craft’s body to extend. The downside? The figures that came with this toy were so small that they were effortless to lose. This updated version appears slightly smaller than the original, coming in at 4.7″x3.9″x1.5″. Also, unlike the ’80s toy, this one can only hold one figure in the cockpit. It is priced at $24.99 and listed for an April 2023 release via the Big Bad Toy Store.

No one I knew ever had the larger Diaclone robot or base. Thankfully, Takara Tomy is relaunching this giant playset, too! However, prepare to lay down $479.99 if you want to pre-order it from the Big Bad Toy Store. The Grand Dion is 20.47″ tall and comes with the following:

  • Vehicle mecha A
  • 2 Vehicle mecha B
  • 2 Vehicle mecha C
  • Vehicle mecha D
  • 4 Diaclone Ver. 2.0 members
  • Diaclone female member
