If only Mark Hamill would stay off of social media.

The Star Wars actor drew sharp criticism from the White House on May 7, 2026 after sharing an AI-generated image on BlueSky that depicted President Donald Trump lying in a grave.

The image showed Trump with eyes closed and hands clasped amid flowers, positioned in front of a gravestone etched with his name and the years 1946-2024. Hamill added the caption “If Only” followed by a longer text that read in part: “He should live long enough to witness his inevitable devastating loss in the midterms, be held accountable for his unprecedented corruption, impeached, convicted & humiliated for his countless crimes. Long enough to realize he’ll be disgraced in the history books, forevermore.”

The post included the hashtag #don_TheCON.

It was clearly AI-generated. It spread quickly across social media before Hamill removed it.

TL;DR

  • Mark Hamill posted a now-deleted AI image on BlueSky on May 6, 2026 showing Trump in a grave with a headstone reading “Donald J. Trump 1946-2024” and the overlay “If Only.”
  • The White House Rapid Response account called Hamill “one sick individual” and tied the post to rhetoric that has inspired assassination attempts.
  • Hamill deleted the image and clarified he wished Trump would live long enough to face political consequences, adding a partial apology.
  • The move fits Hamill’s years-long pattern of public criticism of Trump and Republicans.
  • The post came less than two weeks after a reported assassination attempt on Trump in late April 2026.

The White House Response

The White House Rapid Response account responded directly on X.

The statement read: “.@MarkHamill is one sick individual. These Radical Left lunatics just can’t help themselves. This kind of rhetoric is exactly what has inspired three assassination attempts in two years against our President.”

Officials linked the post to broader concerns about political violence.

Some reports noted the administration also criticized former President Barack Obama, citing Hamill’s recent appearance in a promotional video for the Obama Presidential Center.

Conservative Figures Pile On

Sen. Ted Cruz called the post “sick, twisted and evil.”

Other conservative voices including Rob Schneider and Sean Hannity amplified the backlash. They described the image as unacceptable especially so soon after the latest reported attempt on Trump’s life.

The timing drew particular scrutiny. The post arrived roughly two weeks after an April 25, 2026 incident in which shots were fired at Trump during a dinner event in Washington, though he was unharmed.

Hamill’s Long Record of Criticizing Trump

Hamill has voiced opposition to Trump and Republican policies for more than a decade.

He once read Trump’s tweets aloud in the voice of the Joker. He has repeatedly described the former and current president as “the worst thing that’s ever happened to this country.”

In recent years Hamill mocked Trump’s Star Wars Day post by writing “Proof this guy is full of SITH.”

After one assassination attempt he commented on the size of Trump’s ear bandage.

On a podcast he expressed shame that Americans reelected Trump. He said the second victory was “on us” because he believed more decent people existed in the country.

Hamill has also campaigned for Democratic candidates and used his platform to urge votes against Trump-aligned policies.

The Deletion and Clarification

Hours after the White House response, Hamill removed the original image.

He replaced it with an updated post that read: “Accurate Edit for Clarity: ‘He should live long enough to… be held accountable for his… crimes.’ Actually, I was wishing him the opposite of dead, but apologize if you found the image inappropriate.”

The revised message kept the core call for accountability while acknowledging that some viewers found the visual inappropriate.

It’s the same pattern Hamill has cycled through before. Post something incendiary. Get backlash. Delete. Clarify. Continue.

What This Says About Celebrity Political Speech

The episode highlights the tight line public figures walk when mixing pop-culture fame with partisan commentary.

Hamill’s Luke Skywalker persona still carries weight with millions of fans who grew up on the original trilogy. That makes any political statement from him newsworthy in a way most actors his age can’t match.

At the same time, the swift and forceful White House reply shows how quickly such posts can escalate into official condemnation, especially amid ongoing security concerns for the president.

Hamill’s history suggests he will continue speaking out. The backlash serves as a reminder that not every audience welcomes celebrity opinions on current events.

The pattern likely repeats. Hamill posts. Backlash arrives. Post gets deleted. Clarification follows. The cycle continues until the next one.
