HiDive Picks Up Horror Anime PET

‘PET’ is a 2020 psychological horror anime directed by Takahiro Omori and animated by Geno Studio. It is based on a manga written and illustrated by Ranjō Miyake that was published between 2002 to 2003. The TV thriller ran for one season of thirteen episodes and was originally released in the United States by Amazon, but HiDive has announced that they would be streaming it.

“We’ve got great news for all you psychological anime fans out there: PET is coming to HIDIVE on Thursday, May 18,” they said on their website. “Trust us when we say you’ll want to make time for this, cause we’re dropping the entire series at once. So, what are you waiting for?”

Written by Sadayuki Murai, the series was produced by the animation studio Twin Engine and featured characters designed by Junichi Hayama with Hideyuki Shima handling the music and score. The series stars Keisuke Ueda and Kishō Taniyama as protagonists Hiroki and Tsukasa, respectively.

Wikipedia describes the synopsis as follows,

“In ancient China, martial artists had developed a psychoactive technique that allows its users to enter the subconsciousness of the human mind by manipulating their enemies’ memories via their “Peak”, where their most treasured memories are visible and their “Valley”, where their most negative memories are suppressed. Later during the 21st century, an organization called “The Company” are tasked with retrieving and securing the descendants of said martial artists by turning them into “Pets”, mindless hitmen against various targets who might pose a threat. Tsukasa and Hiroki, a master/pet duo who goes by the name Tsubushiya follows orders from the company as they slowly begin uncovering its secrets as well as a plot involving colleague Satoru and his former foster father, Hayashi.”

The manga was originally published by the Japanese publisher Shogakukan in their ‘Big Comic Spirits’ magazine before being picked up by Enterbrain.
