Hideki Kamiya Announces Departure from Platinum Games

The name Hideki Kamiya has been tied to developer Platinum Games for a very long time. For almost 20 years, Kamiya has been with the company as its co-founder, after being at Capcom under the banner of Clover Studio. His work at Platinum Games includes titles like Bayonetta, Astral Chain, and The Wonderful 101. But his time there has come to an abrupt end to the shock of many fans.

In a post on Twitter, both in Japanese and English, Hideki Kamiya announced his departure from Platinum Games. His final day will be October 12th, 2023. According to the message that Kamiya shared with everyone, his departure was his choice and not an easy decision to make. “As announced on the official PlatinumGames X [Twitter] account, I will be leaving PlatinumGames on October 12, 2023. This came after a lot of consideration based on my own beliefs. And was by no means an easy decision to make.”

Following the message from Kamiya shared on Twitter, the official Platinum Games account shared a message about the announcement as well. The message praised Kamiya’s work with the studio over the years and how much they appreciated his contribution in helping to make Platinum Games what it is today. “We believe that he will continue to succeed in his future endeavors as a game creator…”

Kamiya also went on to say that he would continue to create more games in his own way and to keep an eye out on what he’ll be doing next. Whether that means we’ll see a new game from Hideki Kamiya soon or not is anyone’s guess. Following the announcement, there wasn’t any clarification on what led to the two entities parting ways.

Hideki Kamiya has been a name shared around for years due to his work on popular big action game series. Many know him from being a designer with Capcom on games like Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe. He’s also responsible for the creation of Bayonetta, which helped skyrocket the notoriety of Platinum Games for many people. Platinum Games had also worked on the ill-fated Scalebound for Xbox, and then later in collaboration with Square Enix for NieR Automata. To many, Hideki Kamiya and Platinum games are synonymous with action games and have a unique style that stands out. Although no details were given following the announcement of his departure, there’s hope that whatever is next for Hideki Kamiya is exciting.
