GKids Acquires North American Rights To Release Filmmaker Makoto Shinkai’s Anime Titles


GKids expanded their library with the announcement that they have acquired the rights to release several works of Japanese ‘Your Name’ director and animator Makoto Shinkai. GKids had previously released Shinkai’s hit film ‘Weathering With You’ in the United States and Canada, also handling the English voice cast.
The titles GKids plans to release include alternate history flick ‘The Place Promised in Our Early Days,’ the romantic drama ‘5 Centimeters per Second,’ the action-adventure ‘Children Who Chase Lost Voices,’ and the science fiction OVA ‘Voices of a Distant Star.’ There is no specific release date for the home video, though they are promised “later this year” and will include an English dubbed version of each title.
GKIDS’ President David Jesteadt said in a statement, “We are thrilled to represent these vital early films from Makoto Shinkai.” He continued, “They display the astounding visuals and emotional stories of longing and human connection that have made him one of the most exciting and important directors in animation today, and we look forward to reintroducing them to fans old and new.”


GKids said on their website that “the acclaimed producer and distributor of animation for adult and family audiences, announced today it has acquired the North American distribution rights for a slate of four titles from acclaimed writer/director Makoto Shinkai, whose previous films Your Name. and Weathering With You set box office records both in Japan and around the world. Titles in the slate include the visionary director’s debut feature THE PLACE PROMISED IN OUR EARLY DAYS (2004), the breathtaking love story 5 CENTIMETERS PER SECOND (2007), the epic fantasy adventure CHILDREN WHO CHASE LOST VOICES (2011), and Makoto Shinkai’s directorial debut short film VOICES OF A DISTANT STAR (2002). All titles will be released on home entertainment platforms by GKIDS later this year, featuring both their original Japanese language versions as well as English dubbed versions.”
Makoto Shinkai made his feature film debut with ‘The Place Promised in Our Early Days’ in 2004.
