EA Sports and EA Games Split in EA Restructuring

If you’re someone that plays a lot of sports games, then you’re very familiar with the EA Sports brand and EA games. Many of the major sports that had licensed video game releases were often released with EA Sports on the box, including games like Madden and FIFA. But while the two have been associated with each other for a long time under the same umbrella of Electronic Arts, things are shaking up for the publisher. Both EA sports and EA games are splitting up as the company aims to look into opportunities beyond games when possible.

Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson announced on the EA website that the company is realigning studio leadership with its major studios in order to empower their creative teams. This would include splitting up EA Sports and EA Games, and rebranding EA Games under the name EA Entertainment. This could indicate the company is looking towards things like film and television to expand the reach of their big franchises.

Andrew made the announcement in a message circulated about how the change would positively help Electronic Arts moving forward. “We’re building the future of interactive entertainment on a foundation of legendary franchises and innovative new experiences, which represents massive opportunities for growth…”

There has been a lot of changes going on behind the scenes at Electronic Arts for a while. Not too long ago, Star Wars: The Old Republic had moved development over from BioWare to Broadsword Online Games, with the shuffling of developers to other projects or possibly being laid off. Other moves came from the cancelation of two mobile projects back in January 2023, specifically Apex Legends Mobile and Battlefield Mobile. With this new shift, studios under the banner of EA Games and now EA Entertainment will be mostly the same with moderate changes internally. Both organizations will report to Andrew going forward.

EA Sports will still have many of the big sports titles under its watch. This would mean series like Madden, NHL, PGA Tour will be totally fine. Other games included in this would be the upcoming EA Sports College Football game currently in development and the F1 racing series. EA recently acquired Metalhead Studios back in May 2021, who made Super Mega Baseball, which will also be part of EA Sports.

For EA Entertainment, you can expect to see many of the studios who have made big games for franchises like Star Wars, Battlefield, Mass Effect, and many others. This would include studios such as Respawn Entertainment, DICE, Ridgeline Games, and BioWare. The EA Originals label is also part of this grouping as well. Many licensed games on both consoles and mobile platforms may very well be a big focus here. This means any game projects related to the Star Wars and Lord of the Rings franchises, and possibly more.

“This evolution of our company continues to empower our studio leaders with more creative ownership and financial accountability to make faster and more insightful decisions around development and go to market strategies…”

What do you think of all the changes happening for Electronic Arts right now? Do you think this will lead to good things happening with their games in the nearby future? Tell us your thoughts about everything in the comments down below!
