Billy Mitchell’s Donkey Kong High Scores REINSTATED?!

Billy Mitchell’s disputed high scores for Donkey Kong and Pac-Man have been reinstated by Twin Galaxies as part of a legal settlement. Apparently, they’re attributing the gameplay anomalies to aging board components… or something? The scores will be reinstated in the archives, however, and NOT on the current leaderboard under the current owner. Justice or not? What’s your opinion on the Billy Mitchell situation?

Additional Context:
Billy Mitchell, a well-known figure in the world of competitive arcade gaming, has had his high scores for games like “Donkey Kong” and “Pac-Man” reinstated by Twin Galaxies after a protracted legal and public dispute. This reinstatement comes as a result of a confidential settlement between Mitchell and Twin Galaxies, which was reached before the case was set to go to court.

The dispute began in 2018 when a Twin Galaxies community member accused Mitchell of achieving his scores on a modified arcade board, which would be a violation of the organization’s rules. Twin Galaxies conducted its own investigation and initially concluded that the images shown in the videos of Mitchell’s games could not have been produced by an unmodified arcade board. This led to Mitchell’s scores being removed from the Twin Galaxies website, and he was banned from competing on their competitive leaderboards.

Mitchell’s legal battle to clear his name involved the enlistment of Dr. Michael Zyda, an Emeritus Professor of engineering practice and the founding director for the Games Program at the University of Southern California. In November, Zyda provided an expert opinion stating that the video tapes could depict gameplay on original Donkey Kong hardware despite the anomalies depicted. This, along with other evidence presented by Mitchell, led to Twin Galaxies reinstating his scores.

Twin Galaxies has now added Mitchell’s scores to its “official historical database,” which is a newly added section of the website that displays leaderboards as they appeared in 2014, before the site was acquired by its current owners. This database remains static and sealed, with no new submissions or alterations allowed, only retaining original scores and titles as they existed in 2014. Mitchell’s scores are visible in this historical database, but they do not appear on the live version of Twin Galaxies’ Donkey Kong records.

Mitchell expressed satisfaction with the resolution and looks forward to the next chapter of his gaming career, stating that he has a few announcements coming later in the year. This development marks a significant moment in the competitive gaming world, where the integrity of records and the processes for verifying them are of utmost importance.
