Stop Killing Stop Killing Games?

There’s an internet slap flight raging over the Stop Killing Games movement. The Stop Killing Games campaign, launched by YouTuber Ross Scott of Accursed Farms in April 2024, aims to prevent video game publishers from rendering purchased games unplayable by shutting down servers, sparked by Ubisoft’s decommissioning of The Crew.

The initiative advocates for laws requiring publishers to provide end-of-life solutions, like offline modes or community-run servers, to preserve digital ownership and game accessibility.

However, it faced criticism from Twitch streamer and indie developer Pirate Software (Jason Thor Hall), who called the campaign vague, unrealistic, and potentially harmful to developers, arguing it could burden indie studios and misdirect regulatory focus.

This critique led to a public feud, with Scott responding in videos and interviews, accusing Pirate Software of misrepresenting the campaign’s goals. Supporters like MoistCritikal and SomeOrdinaryGamers backed Scott, emphasizing consumer rights and game preservation, while the debate highlighted broader tensions about digital ownership in gaming.

Despite significant support, the campaign struggled to meet its signature goals for petitions, notably the European Citizens’ Initiative, and Scott announced plans to step back due to burnout.
