Palworld DESTROYS Steam Records as Devs Get DEATH THREATS?!

Palworld ROCKS the sales charts, setting multiple sales and concurrent player records on Steam in its first few days of release. The darker side is that the studio behind the Pokémon-like game is reportedly receiving death threats from unhinged Pokémon stans. Success is a double-edged sword, eh?

Additional Context:
“Palworld,” a game often described as ‘Pokémon with guns,’ has been making waves in the gaming world, not only for its record-breaking success but also for the controversy it has sparked. Developed by Pocketpair, “Palworld” has sold over five million copies in just three days, achieving an impressive rate of 86,000 copies sold per hour. This sales pace outstripped major titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man, God of War, and The Last of Us 2 in their respective first three days.

Despite this remarkable success, the game’s launch has been marred by controversy and death threats directed towards its developers. The game’s massive popularity on Steam, where it recently crossed 1.3 million concurrent players, has attracted significant attention, some of which has been negative. There have been accusations of plagiarism regarding the similarities between “Palworld’s” creatures, known as Pals, and Pokémon. This has led to heated online debates and harassment of the developers on social media.

Pocketpair’s community manager reported receiving death threats, alongside threats to the company. Takuro Mizobe, Pocketpair’s representative, revealed in a tweet that the company had been receiving slanderous comments and death threats against their artists. He requested everyone to refrain from slandering the artists involved in “Palworld’s” development.

There are also serious allegations of “Palworld” copying or being heavily inspired by Pokémon models. Character artists in the gaming industry have pointed out that the similarities in proportions and silhouettes between “Palworld” and Pokémon models are too close to be coincidental. These allegations raise the possibility of legal action from The Pokémon Company, known for being protective of its intellectual property.

Despite these challenges, “Palworld” has set several records, becoming the most-played Japanese-developed game on Steam and the second most-played paid game on the platform, trailing only behind PUBG.
