Mystery Science Theater 3000 Launches Another Kickstarter

MST3K is back on Kickstarter asking for money for another season. The campaign for Make More MST3K launched a Kickstarter today for another season and beyond.

The new Kickstarter campaign launched and already has over $1.1 million of it’s $2 million goal (as of this article.)

Basically the proved themselves and got Netflix to pick up two seasons, but now they’ve passed on a 3rd season:

“Sometime in late 2019, during our third live tour, we got word: even though Netflix liked how our new episodes came out, they wouldn’t be renewing us for a third new season.”

With this new campaign they are hoping to:

1. MAKE MORE MST3K episodes with a new, sustainable model, that lets you decide how long we should keep going, and lets us bring new episodes directly to you, without depending on a network to distribute or keep renewing us for new seasons.

2. BUILD “THE GIZMOPLEX”, our own virtual online theater, where we can host frequent live screenings, premieres, and community events – and you can host MST3K watch parties with friends whenever you want. More on that in a minute.

For those unfamiliar with the show Mystery Science Theater 3000, or MST3K, is a comedy show created by Joel Hodgson, started out on a Minneapolis TV channel in 1988 before moving to the Comedy Channel (Comedy Central) for several seasons. The show’s gimmick is that they riff on old movies.

I grew up watching this show with my mom and siblings and we’ve been fans for years (still miss Joel as the host.)

Fast forward to 2015 and there was a successful Kickstarter campaign to bring the show back, with over $5.7 million on the crowd funding platform.

The new version has Jonah Ray, Felicia Day and Patton Oswald.

Truth be told, I’m not a huge fan of the new seasons, but I know a lot of you might be. I definitely want to see it succeed and more shows able to do their own thing instead of being at the mercy of Hollywood.

Helen Mirren To Star In The Biopic ‘Golda,’ About Israel’s First And Only Female Prime Minister

0

Israeli director Guy Nattiv will direct ‘Golda,’ a biographical film about Golda Meir, Israel’s first female Prime Minister. Academy Award-winning actress Helen Mirren (Hobbs & Shaw) has been cast as Meir.
“As someone who was born during the Yom Kippur War, I am honored to tell this fascinating story about the first and only woman to ever lead Israel,” Nattiv told Deadline. “Nicholas Martin’s brilliant script dives into Golda’s final chapter as the country faces a deadly surprise attack during the holiest day of the year, a core of delusional generals undermining Golda’s judgment, all the while undergoing secret treatments for her illness. I could not be more excited to work with the legendary Miss Mirren to bring this epic, emotional and complex story to life.”
Producer Michael Kuhn will partner with screenwriter Nicholas Martin and hope to start production as soon as October. The two previously worked together for a biopic of Florence Foster Jenkins, which won a BAFTA award for Best Makeup and Hair and a Critics’ Choice Awards for actress Meryl Streep in the Best Actress in a Comedy category.
This will be the second biopic of Meir announced in 2021, with Barbra Streisand executive producing ‘Lioness’ a television miniseries starring Shira Haas as the Middle Eastern politician. According to Deadline, this version will be based on the non-fiction book of the same-name book by Francine Klagsbrun. It will be directed by Emmy winner Mimi Leder (On the Basis of Sex). The series has yet to be picked up by a television channel.
Golda Meir was Israel’s fourth Prime Minister, serving from 1969 to 1974. Her tenure included such historical events as the Munich massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics, a heated dispute with Austria over transitioning Russian Jews to Israel, and the Yom Kippur War. She resigned in 1974 and would write her autobiography “My Life” in 1975 before passing away in 1978.

Did ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ Save The Cinemas? Some In The Media Are Speculating That It Did.

0

No one can deny that the pandemic lockdowns have had an adverse effect on many aspects of society including movie theaters. The shutdown has forced many cinema companies to make tough decisions, but as lockdown measures loosen state-by-state, there is a renewed consumer interest in seeing movies on the big screen.
The question is, what movie would draw audiences back to cinemas? Some in the media have given the answer as the kaiju monster film ‘Godzilla vs. Kong.’ Despite being streamed for free to HBO Max customers, many sought to see the MonsterVerse sequel at the cinema.
“HBO Max subscribers had the option to stream ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ in the comfort of their homes during Easter and Passover weekend, but plenty of moviegoers opted to see it in theaters,” writes CNN Business. “That’s great news for the publicly traded owners of big multiplexes. Warner Bros., the studio that released the film, said Sunday that “Godzilla vs. Kong” has raked in nearly $50 million at the US box office since its release last Wednesday, sending shares of AMC (AMC) — a stock that’s incredibly popular with traders on Reddit — soaring more than 15%.”
“Some cities are now letting theaters reopen, but at a limited capacity to start,” CNN adds. “Some moviegoers are clearly craving the big-screen experience, and that will be a boost for the likes of AMC.”
James Hanton from the British outlet The Guardian agrees. After citing the tepid response to Christopher Nolan’s time-bending spy thriller ‘Tenet,’ he notes how the monster film has become a roaring success.
“Godzilla vs. Kong speaks volumes about what it will take to keep the movies alive,” Hanton says. “Something that makes you forget about the outside world, rather than have you longing to go back to it. Cinema is in too perilous a place right now to be stuck up on a high horse. If it takes brainless kaiju carnage to reignite love for the big screen, then we are not really in a position to complain.”
Aric Jenkins of The Ringer also agrees.
“The box office success first and foremost suggests that consumers are increasingly comfortable sitting in movie theaters after a year of social distancing,” he writes. “It also, more subtly, is a bit of a middle finger—albeit a very early and tentatively raised one—to the naysayers who said streaming would usurp theatergoing as the dominant method of movie consumption when Warner announced its simultaneous release strategy in December.”
The timing of this cannot be understated. With California Governor Gavin Newsom’s announcement that the state could possibly open fully by mid-June, the box office performance of ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ might be the key to getting consumers back in the movie theater.

Former Dr. Who Christopher Eccleston On Show Canon: “I Just Ignore It.”

Dr. Who alumni Christopher Eccleston, known by fans as the Ninth Doctor, shared his candid thoughts about the science fiction show and the canon that was created around it.
After concluding his reprisal as the Doctor for a series of audio dramas, he spoke to Den of Geek about the rearrangement of the canon.
“I just ignore it,” Ecceslton explained. “And he does. We’ve just recorded an episode for instance where the Brigadier is saying to him, ‘You remember, you came to my retirement party and then we ended up on Gallifrey,’ and he said, ‘No, I don’t remember.’ An essential quality of him is he’s entirely in the moment… He can become Peter Capaldi, he can become Jodie Whittaker, he can become Jon Pertwee.”
He then poked fun at the United Kingdom’s current prime.
“Hopefully, he can’t become Boris Johnson,” he joked. “I don’t refer to any of that [canon]. My Doctor is very much in the moment.”
“I’m not a slave to the canon,” Ecceslton added. “I think if the show wants to survive going forward, it needs to explode the canon. That rigid adherence to, ‘There can only be this number of incarnations,’ et cetera, it’s nonsense. It’s nonsense. The imagination is limitless.”
He did not stop there. He also spoke about the “feminization of Doctor Who.”
“I think it’s time for the Doctor to meet the Cyberwomen in the 21st century. We’ve had enough Cybermen,” Eccleston opined. “I would very much like the Doctor to meet Emily Davison who threw herself in front of the Derby winner and was one of the forerunners of the feminist movement and a martyr for it. I think that’d be extraordinary for him to mix with Emily Davidson and Pankhurst and explore that. As I’ve said earlier, he’s very drawn to the feminine. And I think that it’s great that we now have a female Doctor, and I think we should take that further in the way that we look at history and look at it through a female lens. I think the [Ninth] Doctor would respond very well to that.”
Succeeding Paul McGann in the role, Eccleston’s tenure as the Doctor saw its 2005 BBC revival after a decades-long hiatus. Though little was known about his origins, it was discovered that he was a regeneration of the War Doctor played by John Hurt.

Peeps Candy Pieces Are Starring In Their Own Animated Movie

The popular marshmallow candy treats known only as Peeps will get a starring role in their own animated film. Yes, you read that correctly.
Deadline reports that the movie company Wonder Street Entertainment has attained the rights to produce both film and television rights to the gooey treats. The candy is produced by Just Born Inc, a company based in Pennsylvania. It is estimated that over two billion pieces are made each year.
‘The Mauritanian’ producers Christine and Mark Holder will be producing the film along with David Goldblum, who is also penning the script.
“… the feature billed as being in the spirit of Trolls-meets-Smurfs,” notes Deadline. “It will follow a ragtag group of Peeps characters who set out on a cross-country journey in order to attend Peepsfest, an annual brand celebration in Pennsylvania.”
A spokesperson for Just Born expressed their enthusiasm for the project.
“Peeps Chicks and Bunnies have been ingrained in American pop culture for nearly seven decades due to their instantly recognizable shapes and fan-favorite marshmallow taste, making them the perfect characters to bring to life on the big screen,” they said. “We hope the new Peeps film spreads sweetness to families across the country and provides inspiration for fans to express their ‘Peepsonality’ in new ways.”
This is not the first time that a Peeps animated has tried to get off the ground. Back in 2014, ‘Without Charlie’ director Adam Rifkin had tried to get an animated version of the movie off the ground.
“I’ve seen people recreate ‘Scarface’ with Peeps, Roman Gladiators with Peeps, The Wild West with peeps. Anything you can think of someone has done it with Peeps,” Rifkin told Entertainment Weekly at the time. “We feel that way about this. Yes, they are candies. They were invented to be eaten at Easter time, but guess what, these dioramas have proven that these little candied characters have captured people’s imaginations.”
Rifkin has not been announced as a part of the new version.

New Animal Crossing: New Horizons Build-A-Bear Will Feature Isabelle and Tom Nook

The Build-A-Bear X Animal Crossing: New Horizons event will launch today at 9AM CST but I was able to get a screenshot of what will be available.

As expected there will be an Isabelle and Tom Nook “Summer Bundle” with Phrases for $51 each.

Here’s the procedure via an email I got yesterday:

People already have them as pre-orders on eBay!

They haven’t even launched at the time of this post.

It sounds like Social Media isn’t too happy about the choices being Tom and Isabelle yet again:

They even got “Celeste” trending because people were mad she wasn’t one of the options.

‘Black Panther’ Director Ryan Coogler Refuses To Join The Motion Picture Academy

0

‘Fruitvale Station’ director Ryan Coogler has seen many of his films have success at the Academy Awards. At the 2016 ceremony, ‘Creed’ star Sylvester Stallone was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. ‘Black Panther’ garnered seven nominations, winning Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design.
Despite his success, Coogler has declined offers to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
“I don’t buy into this versus that, or ‘this movie wasn’t good enough to make this list,’” Coogler told The Hollywood Reporter. “I love movies. For me, that’s good enough. If I’m going to be a part of organizations, they’re going to be labor unions, where we’re figuring out how to take care of each other’s families and health insurance. But I know that these things bring exposure.”
Citing his nomination for the historical drama ‘Judas And The Black Messiah,’ Coogler questioned the timing of his accolades and why it took so long for the Motion Picture Academy to take notice.
“Why did it take 93 years for there to be three Black producers nominated for an Academy Award,” he asked. “Is it because there weren’t three Black people willing to produce movies? Probably not. Was it because we didn’t have the access to the kind of capital to make a big, sweeping studio feature? Maybe a little bit. Was it because we made that stuff and they didn’t recognize it? Maybe a little bit. But none of it feels good. So it’s bittersweet.”
Coogler described reading the script for ‘Judas And The Black Messiah’ with director Shaka King for the first in 2017. “Our jaws just kind of dropped,” he explained “I felt, ‘That should exist.’ ”
‘Judas and the Black Messiah has received five Oscar nominations including Best Original Song, Best Cinematography, Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, and the coveted Best Picture.
The movie won Top 10 Films at the Black Film Critics Circle, American Film Institute Awards, and the National Board of Review.
