Nintendo just has been dealt a big blow in the Palworld patent infringement lawsuit.
In the ongoing lawsuit filed by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company against Palworld developer Pocketpair in September 2024, Nintendo suffered a significant setback in late October 2025 when Japan’s Patent Office rejected one of its key patent applications (No. 2024-031879) related to creature-capture mechanics, deeming it unoriginal due to a lack of inventive step and citing prior art from established games like ARK: Survival Evolved, Pokémon GO, Monster Hunter 4, and Craftopia.
This application highlights vulnerabilities in Nintendo’s claims, as the rejection suggests these mechanics are evolutionary rather than novel, potentially bolstering Pocketpair’s defense that Palworld innovates on decades-old gaming tropes without direct copying.
