Sixteen years after Gears of War made its debut on the XBOX 360, Cliff Bleszinski’s COGs and Locusts are finally getting a feature film on Netflix, and so many false starts. Not only that, but Netflix will also produce an animated series, according to a Hollywood Reporter exclusive.
The Gears of War video game series centered around the humans of the planet Sera battling for survival against a subterranean race known as the Locust. The franchise is rife with storytelling potential from the grunts fighting a seemingly endless war and the civilian survivors dealing with martial law or those living on the outskirts who’ve totally forsaken the “safety” the Coalition of Ordered Governments provides.
The first three games focus on COG soldiers Marcus, Dom, Cole, and Biard. Each character had his backstory; some were quite tragic. The squad was full of masculinity, ball-busting, and a drive to save the human race at almost any cost. You know, the sort of things today’s entertainment industry appears to despise. So, what can we expect from a Netflix adaptation?
Very little is known at this point. No director, cast, release date, and writers have been announced. However, we can all agree that both adaptations will probably deviate from the source material if the past has taught us anything. We saw drastic changes with The Witcher. These modifications may have been why Henry Cavill called it quits as the series lead.
As I said earlier, there are so many avenues to go down and vast amounts of subjects/topics to explore. Unfortunately, I fear much of this potential will be ignored, and we’ll get the typical subversion or character neutering that has become commonplace. Considering Cliff Bleszinski’s current mindset, I wouldn’t doubt that he would get behind a total overhaul of the series along with whatever fan-antagonizing Netflix would start on Twitter.
