Fortnite developer Epic Games laid off a bunch of employees before Christmas, but it turns out they now need more programmers to work on Fortnite. Uh oh.

Epic Games, known for “Fortnite,” announced significant layoffs, affecting approximately 830 employees, or about 16% of their workforce. In a statement, Epic’s president Tim Sweeney cited these layoffs as a cost-cutting measure, including divesting from the music platform Bandcamp and making the advertising platform SuperAwesome an independent company.
Sweeney acknowledged that Epic had been spending more than its earnings for some time, attributing this to investments in “the next evolution of Epic” and expanding Fortnite as a metaverse-inspired ecosystem.
The layoffs were described as necessary for achieving financial stability, despite efforts to cut costs in other areas. Impacted employees will receive severance packages and other support, and the company emphasized that core game development would not be affected.
